If you load this particular bullet, I would appreciate it if you would give the avg bullet length. Hornady 9mm 124gr Jacketed Flat Point bullet length.

Thanks in advance

Haven't loaded that particular bullet but Hornady recommends 1.050" with the 124 fmj-fp bullet in 9MM.

I load my 124 gr Berry's FP to 1.055" for w/e that's worth. 124 gr XTP's to 1.06". FP OAL can be lengthened quite a bit if your gun has a long leade. But the tighter "chambers" of lots of 9mm guns will choke on 'em. Hornady's test OAL for their 9mm XTP's just barely chambers in one of my guns. So if you ever want to buy a new 9mm or possibly share your ammo with anyone, you might wanna stick close to their recommended minimum.

You do not need to use the OAL listed on published load data as often test barrel fixtures and not real pistols are used to measure chamber pressures. Using published OALs WILL NOT ensure reliable feeding/chambering of finished rounds in your pistols.

Determining OAL should not be a guessing game and I use the following process for semi-auto loads whenever I use a new bullet:

1. Make sure resized cases drop freely into the barrel chamber. If not, adjust the resizing die to ensure the cases are resized full-length and fall in freely into the chamber.

Quality Control Note: If I run into a case that's overly bulged/expanded (especially at the case base) that won't fully resize, I will attempt to resize 1-2 times more while rotating the case 90 degrees in the shell holder/plate each time. If the case won't fall in freely into the case gauge/tightest barrel chamber, it gets tossed in the recycle bin as I consider it too far expanded/stretched to be reloaded.

2. Determine Max OAL - Make a dummy round (no powder/primer) and perform the barrel drop test with the barrel out of the pistol starting with the SAAMI max OAL until the dummy round falls into the chamber freely with a "plonk" and spin without hitting the start of rifling.

3. Next determine Ideal OAL - Load the Max OAL dummy round in the magazine and manually release the slide without riding the slide with your hand. Incrementally decrease the OAL until dummy round reliably feed/chamber. Depending on the pistol/barrel used, Ideal OAL that will work reliably will vary. If you are reloading for multiple pistols, use the Ideal OAL that will work reliably in all the pistols.

Only your barrel can determine the proper OAL. Find where you touch the lands and then back off of that by .010" making sure they fit the mag., and feed well.

Yep, I know. I have loaded a good number of bullets using "other" bullet data, for over 30,000 9mm loads.
The oal is fine . Feeds and shoots well.

I have ANOTHER bullet I'm loading near/at MAX LOAD data.
The powder is getting close (.01-ish") to being compressed or at least in contact with the bullet base.
Having the seating depth at least gives me a sanity check for pressure. It's in a short-barrelled pistol, so even my chrono doesn't give me something useful to compare.

MY Data and oal is at 1.142"

Does anyone have this Hornady bullet length?

If not, I'll press on (pun intended).
