This is the senate version of HB 873 - Calling for a statewide "assault weapon" ban. We only have to look at Chicago to see what banning firearms does to reduce crime. It only serves to disarm law-abiding citizens while criminals ignore the law and keep theirs.

Unless it is rescheduled at the last minute as sometimes happens, SB16 goes to the Public Health committee Wednesday, Feb.21st. This committee is made up of largely anit-gun senators from Chicago/Cook County . In fact, Sen. Schoenberg compared gun owners to sex offenders stating law-abiding gun owners should be registered just like sex offenders. The deck was intentionally stacked by sending the bill to this committee for approval. But we need to be heard on this issue and I urge everyone who cares about their right to own firearms to call each one of the committee members and ask them to vote against this bill.

Bill Brady and Dale Righter are pro-gun so no real need to bother them. Pankau and Radogno could go either way - a call to remind them why they were elected would be good.

Start calling at 9 am on Feb.21 - Be polite, state your case briefly being sure to mention you oppose "SB16", thank the staff for their time.

There was another thread about this. I am going to ask the MODs to combine them. I think the other one was in regards to the House version of this bill.

Why cant they leave us alone? We have not done anything! Lets lock up the criminals and leave law abiding people alone.

Update from Springfield - Feb 21, 2007

Today SB0016, the Senate shell bill AKA: 2007 Assault Weapons Ban was not called in the Public Health Committee. This bill will eventually be called and will pass out of this committee. SB0016 was deliberately sent to Public Health because of the make up of the committee. At some point language will be amended into the bill. It may be amended in committee or on the floor of the Senate. In any this will be a floor fight. We will keep you posted.
