Well, I’m looking at purchasing a 4 bore blunderbuss and was wondering what folks shoot through them.

Im thinking around 2oz of shot and probably some 1F powder.

It is a flinter also.

The would use it for deer and turkey…and novelty of course.

4 bore is 1/4 of a pound! am I correct?

That sounds AMAZING

I use 450 grain powder charge in my 4 bore rifle. Blunderbuss barrel likely is not nearly as heavy as a rifle barrel. Good load would probably be about 300 to 350 grains of powder with 5 ounces of shot. You won't get up that high unless you have a lot of experience with heavy recoil guns. Work your way up slowly. Don't shoot it unless it is very well made and in excellent condition. Recoil on these things is enormous. If something breaks it is going to hurt.

Good God Almighty!!!

450 gn of Powder! pretty much a canon! What kinda recoil are we talking about here? modern smokless cartridges equivalent?

Make sure if your hunting laws before you use something bigger than a 10 bore. Could be considered a punt gun. Not allowed in my state.

There is no limit on shotgun size for deer and Turkey in GA. There may be no limit for all muzzleloaders too but I would have to check further on that. Upland birds and water fowl is limited to 10 ga.

The limit on bore size, or gauge, is 10ga for WATERFOWL only. It's a Federal regulation. To say it a little differently, is bore size, is how many lead balls that are the same size as the bore, equal a pound.
Shotguns don't have as much recoil as a rifle because the load is going down a smooth barrel, not one with rifling that would cause resistance and more recoil. Yes there's going to be a lot of recoil, but not as much as a rifle. The British use to hunt lions from the backs of elephants with 4 bore rifles. But the rifling was about 1 turn in 32 feet . Just enough to stabilize the big ball, not not so much to give a lot of resistance and cause too much recoil.
Years back I made a 8ga O/U muzzleloading shotgun. For some reason I settled on 4oz of shot and 400grs of 1F.. Sometimes 30@ of 32 cal RBs. With the bird shot it would knock down geese from 65 yards. If shot straight up at overhead geese, it would push me flat on my back. Sadly, I sold it by mistake at a gun show. Oh well.

A BP shotgun usually shoots by volume the same amount of powder as shot. At least that's a excellent starting point. That equal parts of shot to powder is normally for 2F powder. One F would have a little less power so 10 or so more grains could be used if going to one F. Oh, and the only reason my 8 would kill geese at 65 yds was because I put about .010 of choke in each barrel. That's only a IC choke but it sure seemed to help.

Found some data on 4 bore round ball loads, 1 inch diameter ball, light load 1\2 ounce (219 grains) of powder. Heavy load 1 ounce (440 grains) powder. Data is from the Internet so we all know it's gotta be true and accurate. Use at your own risk.

anybody know if these are real? supposed to be the biggest BP cartridges. A internet lore I’ve seen for decades

Not sure what those are but I think the Schroeder & Hetzendorfer 2 bore is the biggest.

.500 S&W, .45-70, .700 Nitro Express, 2 bore

Now that brings it into perspective! I built a 2 bore under hammer thing for a fellow about 20 years ago. I did not test fire it. The barrel was made from a hydraulic cylinder ram. It was just slightly less than the diameter of a golf ball for the bore size. Judging by the size of that brass case that Hawg posted I'm glad I didn't shoot the thing!
