Any NYC members?

Sounds like the answer is a resounding NO :D

Although, I will be going to school there in about 2 months. All my firearms will be staying at my folks place. :(

My understanding is, that if you are not a member of the NYPD it's very hard (impossible) to own any kind of firearm in NYC.

How many people live in NYC? Ok, I just googled it, over 8million people.
Not one answered this thread. That is just effed up. I'll bet there are more High Roaders in my little podunk county.

I love New York! Ever since I was tiny, and only got to see it on the occasional day trip from visiting grandparents in Connecticut, I've thought of New York as the brain center of the universe. Partly because of that early attraction, I eventually shared an apartment for a year in Brooklyn (some friends needed a 3d person on the lease); I kept my guns (fewer, then) in my room at one of my parents in another state while I was there.

The gun laws of NYC (in tandem with onerous taxation) removed all desire of mine to live there [EDIT: insert "again" :)] until / unless I was so rich that the laws would be merely an annoyance rather than a full-time drag. Haven't lived there since the 20th Century, and sadly have barely even visited -- oh, well!

Lots of things I miss about the city, but living there just doesn't fit my aesthetics any more.

How much trouble is it to go shooting, what are you allowed to own, what kind of permits are needed etc.

Do you get searched if you ride the subway, can you refuse and not ride etc.

escaped from NYC

Lots of things are great about NYC, being allowed to arm yourself in ANY fashion for self defense is not one of them.

My favorite saying about the Big Apple?

"Only criminals are ALLOWED to have guns."

Think about it.

OK, let's see. First there are four kinds of pistol permits in NYC.

Carry Permit - You have a better chance of seeing god than gettinng one, basically only available for the rich or politically connected.

Business Permit - Allows you to have a handgun at your place of business. You need to prove you have a need for it (have been robbed etc). All the paperwork must be done, in person, at 1 Police Plaza in Mahattan.

Premise Permit - Allows you to keep a loaded gun in your home for protection. Takes anywhere from 6 months to a year to get and $250.00 every 3 years. You are only allowed to take it to a range twice a year and you need permission from NYPD, in writing, to do so. All the paperwork must be done, in person, at 1 Police Plaza in Mahattan.

Target Permit - Allows you to hunt and shoot at the range as much as you like but does not allow you to keep it loaded in your home for protection. This permit is also 6 months to a year and $250.00. All the paperwork must be done, in person, at 1 Police Plaza in Mahattan. Your permit comes with a purchase permit that allows you to buy one handgun and you have 72 hours to return to 1 Police plaza to have the handgun inspected (all they do is check the serial number and make you wait a couple of hours). If you want to buy a second gun you need to request another purchas permit, takes a couple of months to get and you once again have 72 hours after purchasing the handgun to bring it in for inspection. You must transport the handgun to and from the range in a locked container, stored in the trunk of your car and the ammo may not be carried in the same container.

Keep in mind that if you want to get both regular range time and keep it for home protection you will need both the Target and the Premise Permits.

IN NYC there are about 4 or five ranges, they range in membership fees anywhere from $300 to $1000 a year and are usually $10.00 an hour range time.

You are not allowed to have any handgun with less than a 3 inch barrel.

Also an additional permit is required to own a rifle or shotgun, 3 to 6 months and $150.00 every 4 years for renewal.

I haven't been in the subways for at least 15 years so I can't comment on the searches.

I gave up my target permit about 4 years ago, long story. So things may have changed a bit since then..

Man, that is absolutly craptastic!!

I can buy any gun I can afford, carry it any way I wish(technically) and go and shoot it 2 minutes away in the woods. A ccw permit costs 20 dollahs and is done on site right away.

If you are ever near Pittsburgh, give me a holler and we'll go shootin, I own some fun guns!!

pacodelahoya, thanks for the invite. My daugther lives in Greensburg PA so I'm in the Pittsburg area often.

Actually what most of my gun toting friends who are still living in NYC do is get a side job in security work. Lets say hypothetically a bunch of persons get together and start a security company. They then file all necessary paperwork with the city, once and if it is aproved they can now carry to and from "job sites" while they are their only clients. I have a friend that is an armed guard at dave and busters in time square. He carries his glock to work and home on the subway everyday. There are loopholes out there, exploit them. :)

i go to Fordham U, no firearms at school for me.

NYC is definitely an interesting animal, not really for me. I did my undergrad at Fordham and now i'm staying on for grad. Love the school, but like i said, NYC just isn't my kinda place.

Mr Ochie, rifles and shotguns require a separate permit. It's about a 3 month wait and about 125 dollars with a 4 year renewal. Finger prints must be taken even if you already have a pistol permit and of course are not included in the price of the permit. The only rifles you can shoot in NYC ranges are .22's, anything bigger and you will need to drive out to Long Island .

NYC has a separate assault weapons ban than upstate, correct? But, in other words, it's just a royal PIA and expense to own a gun. So, say you have a thing for WW2 era guns, NYC isn't that bad. I mean, you can GET what you want, it's just going to cost a lot more.

When I lived up their (for part of my life). At that time you needed a permit for a long-gun and shotgun.
At the time I left. Anyone who wanted a permit for a long-gun or shotgun, the easy way was, when one went to apply for the permit at their local police pct., they (applicant) should give the answer to the question that would be asked to them: “What are you going to be using it for”?. The easiest way to get the permit was, to answer that question with, “for hunting”.
It was easier to get a long-gun and/or shotgun permit, than a pistol permit.
One note. Their was Edelman’s (gun store, very popular at that time, even for N.Y.C residents) just outside the city, Nassau county (Queens/Nassau border). If you were a resident of New York City, you could purchase a rifle and/or shotgun, from Edelman’s legally, without a permit. But….Problems will arise when you bring it back in New York City limits, though. Because you have to be registered (permit holder) with the N.Y.P.D. So the process was for NYC, which consists of the 5 boroughs (Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island)….get a permit, .after you get the permit… each long-gun/shotgun you buy, MUST be registered. Their was a grace period for registering it. One did not have to get a purchase authorization for each long-gun/shotgun bought, like hand-guns.

<<Man, what a pain to have a rifle in NYC.>>

Well…you can say that again!!!!!!!!! The laws are a lot harder, than years back!

<<Am I reading it right, does mag capacity have to be limited to five rounds?>>

For hunting (present day)

MANNER OF TAKING (New York State)
It is illegal to take or hunt wildlife:

-with any semi-automatic firearm
with a capacity to hold more than 6
rounds, except:
- firearms using .22 or .17 caliber
rimfire ammunition,
- firearms altered to reduce their
capacity to no more than 6 shells at
one time in the magazine and chamber
combined;
- or autoloading pistols with a barrel
length of less than eight inches.

There was a time; a permit holder can buy ANY long-gun / shotgun. The capacity did not matter. Only for hunting. 5, plus 1 in the chamber. If you went hunting with an AR-15, let’s say. One HAS to put a block in it. Other than that you could have 20/30 rounds, otherwise. Even though, I sometimes still go hunting up their. Upstate New York, that is (also known as upstate-errs, country people, from the N.Y, C. perspective), Catskills, Adirondacks’ (mountains and farmland). I keep out of the big apple, even though at times, I go to see the mother-in- law.

i'm an upstater i still keep hope alive that westchester and down will decide to be their own state. they can stay new york, and we can be upstate NY

This is the prayer I whisper every night:)
