Not "built" but rebuilt an old SGW a few years ago I got when I was 10 (poor thing was pretty worn out). Quality was fine. However, don't they just buy their parts from subs, or do they make their own now???
I shot a friend's standard 20", 1-9 twist, A2 rifle built on a stripped Rock River lower. Post ban upper model. I could hold pretty tight at 100 yards with it, and there were not any malfunctions with about 250 rounds of South African surplus ammo sent downrange.
Personally, since I have a C&R FFL on file with Brownell's, I would get a DPMS complete upper for $402.00, a DPMS lower parts kit for $44.00, a Rock River stripped lower for about $100-120.00 and a buttstock assembly for $50-60.00. It is possible to build an "all brand name" rifle for under $600.00. (and $15 cheaper if you want a 16" barrel instead of a 20") That is why I spent the thirty bucks and got my C&R FFL.
My buddy has an FFL. I might have to look into the Brownells route.
I'll probably be using the DPMS receiver.
I just figured out that I can buy a DPMS complete lower (with guts and stock and everything) and order just the upper from Model 1 and come out a few bucks ahead and also save myself the assembly of the lower.
I had no problems with the Model 1 standard 20" kit. I started off with a stripped Eagle Arms/Armalite lower. Functions fine, accuracy was better than I can currently do.
Hey Goalie, how does a C&R help you with ordering the receiver for an AR? All the rest of it can be ordered mail order (which is what I did) but my understanding is that the receiver (stripped or not) still has to go through a full fledged FFL.
for having and sending them a copy of his C&R FFL. It doesn't help him get an AR lower receiver, but anything else in the catalog that isn't tracked as a firearm by serial number gets discounted, to include uppers, buttstocks, trigger groups, etc.
Brownell's is nice that way. I wasted no time sending them a copy of my C&R FFL.
Bryan, if I had a "real" FFL I could get the lower stripped for less than 100 dollars, that is why I listed 120 dollars in my estimate. The lower is the one thing I still had to buy from an FFL.
I bought an M-4 16" barrel parts kit from them.
I have had and continue to have a problem with zeroing the sights.
I bought an A3 upper and one of their carry handles(since the colt one I bought could not be zeroed). I couldn't get it to hit poit of aim and had the elevatio and windage maxed out. I suspect that the front sight assembly was canted. I sent it back for service and about a month later got the upper back. It is acceptable now but I think that the front sight base is still slightly canted since I'm nearly maxed in right windage and front sight post elevation. It has a Wilson "match" grade barrel instead of the chrome lined and is rather accurate. If I had to choose again I'd go with RRA or one of the bigger names.
ANyone check the RRA dealer prices lately? I wonder if a C&R would get you delaer prices with them? My dealers cost on building my A2 16" mid length was $575.
