I am getting a 9 mm and was wondering if anybody has tested different kinds of self defence ammo testsin phone books for expansion.I was thinking of trying Hornady tap, federal hydashok, remington golden saber and mabe gold dot.I live in the city and can't test my ammo.If you have any pics of test ammo please share them thank you.

I actually did some testing about a month ago using a recycle bin loaded with well soaked newspaper.

Gun used Sig 226. 4.4" barrel, I shot 10 each of the following:

Winchester WB 9mm 147gr. JHP 13" avg. penetration no expansion on any.

Fed Hydroshock 9mm 124 gr. JHP 10.5 avg. penetration, expansion was very inconsistant, 3 perfect, the rest were either very little expansion or in the middle of perfect and very little.

Fed HST 9mm 124 gr.+p JHP avg. 12" penetration, excellent expansion on all 10 rounds.

I will try to take pictures and post them ( cameras not my thing).

I also tested some .45 ammo and had the exact same results with the Federal HST and now have all me defensive loaded with this ammo.

Here is a Federal HST Ballistic link:

I would argue that there has been more testing of the 9mm than any other pistol caliber.

:)

Testing ammo in phone books, water, wet sand etc only shows you what that round will do when you shoot phone books, water, wet sand etc. It's fun to play with but not very conclusive. Ballistic gelatin approximates tissue but is consistent which muscle tissue, organs, and bone are not.

Any of those rounds you mention would be good self defense ammo. There is no magic bullet. Use the round that is reliable in your gun and the most accurate.
