There were imported Police Trade Ins. The 3” are gone but they still have some 4” left at $399. Talking to a few others and seeing posts on other forums, what they sold was a mixture of dash 6 & 7’s. The -6 were pre lock and -7 had the dreaded lock. It was pot luck what you got. A few like mine came with a lanyard ring which is fitted into the grip not drilled into the frame. I understand some were really filthy but I lucked out. Mine was pre-lock and pretty clean. Trigger was heavier than most of my other Smiths but after I stripped it down, cleaned and oiled it and put in a 15lb rebound spring, all is well. I’m tickled to death to add another 3” to the collection for $400. If anyone knows what the proof marks mean, I would love to know.

Very nice! The 3 inch guns were gone by the time I heard about them and I already have a 4 inch

In 1990 purchased a brand new S&W Model 29 Classic from a rod and gun club in Germany. Upon inspection I saw the same/really close marks as to what you are seeing, plus the importers stamp WISCHO. I was told since it was sold in Europe/Germany, it had to be re-proofed to their standard/procedure.

Shown are stamps on the barrel lug, near the frame, and one on the lower part of the frame. There is also the same flaming ball on the rear of the cylinder, between the webs. I'm not exactly sure what they all represent other than the WISCHO stamp. I'm guessing the flaming ball is for CIP, and the letter D with the star above/bar J is for a certain location and date? Anyway, here is what I have:
