Anyone else going through a weird anti-tactical phase?

The Sharps and the Trap Door were tactical gun's for there time. I would like to have a Mall Ninja AR for the fun of it (light and front handel), and a couple of LTR's for the collection.

I like both the plastic and the wood. It really depends on what you're prefrences are and what you want the gun for. For self defense I have an sks with the origional wooden stock, a single barrel 20 guage (I'm saving up for a 12 ga. pump) and a Ruger P89. I also have my greadgrandpa's 16 guage made in 1927, it's my absolute favorite gun that I own...not just because it's a family heirloom either. I like what Clint Smith says about the high-end expensive guns, you don't need a $3000 Ar-15 to defend yourself with, you need the gun you have. I'm starting to really dislike all the tacticool crap people use, just keep it simple.
I'm 19 by the way, so I've only just started in gun collecting...

I must admit, I am more attracted to wood and steel, ww2 era weaponry and muzzleoaders. That being said, I almost bought a ar once...... until I realized I could buy a m1 carbine, a m1 garand and have money left over for ammunition for both of them for the same price. Oh well, when the shtf I guess I will be one of the first to go to gun heaven, clinging to my outdated, useless pieces of wood and steel!
I dont dislike tactical weapons, they just are not "my thing". I have several friends that own them, and I have shot them they are fun but to me, they are just "missing something".
I do have to admit though, going to the range and seeing a 100 lb man dressed in tactical black with enough equipment strapped to his carbine and his vest that he dang near has to have his wife help him carry it is somewhat amusing to me. But, I would probably amuse him too, dressed in buckskins carrying a flintlock smoothbore.
To each his own, enjoy what you have. I know I will.

I'm having quite the opposite, being low income pretty much everything I have is milsurp or ancient so its all wood stocks and over 50 years old (barring the hi point carbine which I would hardly call tacticLOL).
But once I have a nice AR, a FAL and an AK thats all nice and tacticLOL I think I'll be done and go back to my roots.

I like to have a little of everything, that way when im out of my Black rifle stage I can go to the steel and wood ones, when I get sick of my revolvers, I can pick up a Sig or my Glock. Diversity is the name of the game.

I grew up enamored of everything military. Having been there and done that, I learned a few things.

There are good reasons that the military, police, hunters, and armed civilians do things differently. They have different means and different objectives. I no longer HAVE to have everything in flat black or olive drab. It's ok if a gun doesn't accept ALL of the accessories I want it to.

Yesterday I was hunting with some friends, one of them is a rabid mall ninja who worships everything with "USMC" stamped on it. Spends two hours prepping his gear, making sure that everyone can see him do it. I told him that in real life, you don't get that much time to obsess over gear because you need it to do your job. Military gear is made by the cheapest bidder. Civilians aren't forced into this standard.

His father was using a Marlin lever gun in .32. I had a conversation with him, to the effect that there is a whole culture of lever guns and hunting arms from the first part of the 20th century that I know little about, and I want to learn more.

What I find is, when it's my JOB to know everything about military hardware, it's a welcome relief when I can use my own gear and I don't have to.

Never.

I like black and stainless.

But dislike anything wood and anything old.

Agreed. My dad gave me my first rifle when I was 14, stainless synthetic 10/22. After that, I fell in love. Black and stainless is the best way to go.

I am not ANTI-ANYTHING when it comes to guns. Don't want to think like the other side. :neener:

Is tactical another word for low maintenance? Because if it is, sign me the hell up. If it is waterproof and corrosion resistant I'm all for it.

The more I see those wood kits for AR's the more I like them.

I have phases of 'wow my new cowboy shooter is the cat's meow' vs. 'damn this evil black rifle thing is cool.'

It's also the reason I have leather rifle scabbard, a bandolier AND an 'assault case' and 'load bearing vest', Honestly I've used these items in photoshoots but I haven't USED them except to haul rifles to the range.

The rifles however, I have been shooting a lot.

Oh and hows this for 'tactical'... I try to make sure I have a holster and ammunition carrier for every handgun I own. You know how hard it is to find a .32-20 cartridge slide? Not that I'll ever NEED to use it. I just want one. Do I have a practical reason to belt carry a 1927 Colt revolver in said caliber? Nope. But if I do, I want it to BE practical. Does that make sense?

Oh and FYI spending any time around Justin will make you jones for some tacticool stuff.

ive always done my own thing, almost all my guns wear their orignal stocks other then my SKS that is in Tapco gear simply because its easier to shoot, for me atleast.

I'm not reading all of the posts, I'm just tossin in my 2 lincolns. "I like wood...." that's what she said. LOL. Tactical is ok, but the light weight goes against recoil. The wood maybe heavier, but it's more reliable IMO.

and the comment about getting fancy to go hunting, well if I hunt on a stool, I wear the real tree, but if I'm in a stand or in a blind or on my deck or porch, I'm in wranglers and under armor. A deer don't care if you wear a speedo or a space suit once you wash it in scent eliminator. Hell, I think I'll wear a suit and tie this weekend to go bow hunting.

Lever Guns

I have a safe full of AR's and AK"s but my last three guns have been lever guns, simple big bore marlin 444 and marlin 45/70 I like a gun that that you can stick your thumb in the barrel, I am spending more time in the woods and less time at gun shows.

I only have two poly-furniture rifles, but even they are anti-tactical...

NEF .22LR single shot break-action, iron sights
Savage 111 .30-06 w/ Bushnell Trophy 3-9X 40mm

yes, the stocks are poly, but they have traditional wood stock lines, no rails or other silly affectations, so I don't consider either "Tactical", just "workhorses"

I have one AR. I don't think I'll be purchasing anything else that's "tacticool".

I never tire of military hardware, but I can't figure how soldiers somehow became "operators".

Where I come from a female operator answers phone calls and a male operator drives a piece of heavy equipment.

... no rails or other silly affectations...
Scope mounts, light mounts, and free-floated barrels aren't silly affectations. They serve a purpose.

If you put nonfunctional rails on a gun just for looks, that'd be different, but railed receivers and forends are not pointless.
