The wife and I were thinking about moing to the San Antonio area or the outskirts. How is the area. I am strong into my 2A beliefs and just wonder if ranges or places to shoot are widely available?

Please anyone from this are chime in with what you like and hate about the are. I mainly shoot Long Range Precision rifles or modern military style (AR15's). Am I going to have issues finding places to shoot both?

Thanks

Hi, CDJ.

I'm in the Houston area but visit San Antonio frequently. You sound like a guy who will get along well here in Texas. You'll find that there is not a lot of public land to shoot on but there are plenty of public and private ranges where you will be able to shoot.

I am. I love the area, except for traffic sometimes. The people are very friendly and the pace is laid back given the size of the city.

There are a number of ranges, but I've only been to 3 of them. My favorite is Bandera Gun Club and is outside of the city a ways. I like it that way because it's a nice scenic drive through the hill country and far enough out to keep the riff raff away.

Also, I highly recommend The Powderhorn gun shop. It's not as big as some others, but the people there are super friendly and top notch. They have fair prices too.

I live on the NE side of SA near Randolph AFB (sinse 2008). I pretty much shoot exclusively at Cedar Ridge Range. They are a great outdoor range, but don't have any rifle ranges longer than 100 yards.

One thing that you might like...first Saturday of the month, there is an IDPA style carbine shoot, which is a fun way to move/shoot that AR.

There are lots of ranges in the area, and there is a great app from NSSF you can use to find ranges.

I retired from the USAF in 2010 after 28 years, and my kids were sick of moving, so we stayed here. We live in Guadalupe county, which is much lower tax-wise than Bexar (pronounced 'bear') county, where SA is.

The 2A is alive and well in TX, even if SA has a liberal Obama-supporting mayor.

Forgot to mention -- Camp Bullis has a 1000 yard rifle range but the entire range is restricted to military personnel.

That is why one lives in the surrounding counties like kerr, Kendall or bandera county great sheriff's that are pro 2A

I live in Austin and have used Dietz's Range. It's a few miles west of New Braunfels, which sits just north of San Antonio.

If you want the long range facility and don't mind a 2 hour drive, Best In The West gun range recently opened in Liberty Hill and has up to 1000 yards...

Thanks everyone. With worsening arthritis the high humidity of the NC mountains is taking its toll on me. The wife and I area looking for a place that is family and gun friendly. I have a 2 year old daughter and she is the biggest concern. We are actually both excited about potentially moving there. Thanks again with all of the information, you guys are helping my side of the decision be a lot easier.

If you are looking to escape high humidity SA is definitely NOT the place to go lol.we have 6 month summers in which there is constant high humidity, day and night. You could step outside at midnight anytime from june thru september, and you will be sweating in under a minute.

I am in 85-95% everyday it had rained 22 out of he last 26 days here.. I just despise rain and the lingering humidity from it...

The wife is German decent and really is wanting to move to New Braunfels. Me personally, I would rather b in Arizona or Nevada.. I love he desert.... but whatever makes the wife happy, makes me ..,ur um well... Happy I guess.lol. The rain here in the mountains is killing my arthritis. It is honestly everyday.

Before you make the move, then perhaps you should visit not only SA, but also places in AZ and NV. I lived in TX, CO, NV, and now FL. My humidity is even worse here than NC, and one thing I do miss about northern NV was the sunny dry climate - more days of sunshine than anywhere here in the "Sunshine State"........

I have been all of the places mentioned all recently except Texas(been about 7 years since I was there). Our average rainfall is 48.68" but we are over 70" right now so far this year. The humidity of the northwestern mountains in NC is terrible. The winters are getting to be nothing but wind. this past winter we had 17 days with gusts over 75mph. After replacing the guttering on our house twice in two years it gets a bit much. Nevada is my ideal place but the wife has a really good job opportunity in the SA area. I traveled for a living for years and spent quite a bit of time in Dallas/FW area. I like Arizona but my wife is mainly against it. She did not like it at all.

Not from there, but I shot at Dietz once. I'm fairly certain that was it at least.

I'd go back to it - but I'd be looking for a different range that suited me a bit better.

I, too, live in San Antonio. I live in the north side of town. I like the indoor range at Bass Pro Shop, at The Rim shopping center. I also like A Place to Shoot, which is outdoors, and on the south side of town.

Bass Pro is good for handgun, but not for long-range rifle. A place to shoot has rifle stations, but I don't know the distance.

I went once to Cedar Range. The range itself is good, but the owner is rude.

I'd also like to mention that I like Nagel's gun shop, although I understand not everyone does.

Awesome, Schwarf. The San Antonio area sounds better and better to me with ever post. I think we are going to try to check it out in September. Fly out for a few days, kinda get the feel of the place. Thanks for the info.

I can't speak re shooting in San Antonio, but the absolute best steaks in the world are at Bohanans Steak House down by the Riverwalk. Actually, they've got some great restaurants in that city.

If your looking to move to avoid rain, Texas is a darn good choice. lol I really don't know san Antonio very well but have been traipsing around New braunsfels and surrounding areas for 12 years. I enjoy it. I've not used any ranges down that way but have heard good things of a few.

Also have heard good things about best of the west.

CDJ--
If you haven't already found these, here are some resources:

Forum for Texas CHL holders is at www.texaschlforum.com. Good general information about CHL instructors, licensing, places to shoot, gun stores, etc.

New Braunfels local gun shop: www.oldagguns.com. Comal Pawn also has a gun section that has an occasional treasure (and information on CHL instructors).

High end custom rifles: www.hillcountryrifles.com (No, I'm not a customer).

Couple of nearby gunsmiths: www.canyonsportingarms.com and www.tenring.com (No, haven't used either, but have heard generally good things.)

Couple of gun clubs: Central Texas Silueta Assn. (www.silhouette-texas.us) and the New Braunfels Schuetzen Verein (est. 4 Jul 1849). Both have private ranges near Dietz range.

San Antonio has one active gun collectors group that I know of--Alamo Arms Collectors Assn (think the name is correct).

Don't forget to check out the Texas State Rifle Assn. (www.tsra.com).

Good luck with your move.

I would suggest that you look at Kerrville. very German and a more dry climate than San Antonio. Also very outdoors oriented... It is about an easy hours drive from San Antonio and a bit longer but more scenic drive to Austin.

We might be making the drive just for fun in the next week or so since I need to visit Cabela's in Buda (just south of Austin) and then over to Wimberly to pick up an early Texas flag (a Bonnie Blue). Then perhaps over to the Texas Wildseed Farm, just outside of Kerrville, to pick up seeds for the spring flowers.

Normally this time of year every thing is brown but with some significant recent rains, things should be green.

for more info on Kerrville check:

Fredericksburg, a little northeast of Kerrville wold also be very much worth considering. If I could pick up our land and move it, that area would be my choice.:)
