I just bought an old Savage Model 24J O/U Combination .410 and .22 Magnum...

I haven't tried it out yet, but I think it will make a great rabbit hunting gun. It shoots 3" .410 shells, so I bought a box of Remington #6 shells. I like the size and weight. The selector switch is on the hammer.

Anyone with combination gun experience have any information to share?

I used to use a Savage 24 .22 LR over .410 for about all my hunting as a youngster. I had excellent luck with it.

I actually have a Savage model 24 something or other in the safe as we speak. This ones chambered for .357 magnum over 20ga. Needs a bit of work as the buttstock is cracked and the forearm needs a bit of work too. I'll get around to fixing it up one of these days.

My dad had one chambered for .222 Remington over 20ga, he loved it. My brother has it now. The old original 24 in .22/410 was the best one, sort of belonged to all us, but my sister has it now.

I have used one plenty as a kid and now own one in 22/410 with the barrel selector on the side of the receiver. They make excellent rabbit guns or for any small game or hunting situation that might present a still or moving shot.

I keep one in my closet with a 22 subsonic and 410 slug. The 22 would not destroy my hearing and if the intruder doesn't take the hint the slug should change his way of thinking, at this point a little loss of hearing is acceptable.

Of course this is backed up by my pistol.

Always been interested in one as a truck/camping gun - but always wondered how they shoot.

I'm not so worried about the shotgun barrel, but how's the accuracy out of the rifle barrel? Do they hit to POA or is there an offset from the sights?

I used to have a Savage 22LR/20 ga.. The ultimate "pot hunters" gun. With buckshot in the shotgun barrel, and a 22 LRHP I was ready for anything.

I could kick myself for selling that gun.

The 22 shot as well as any other 22. Just not as fast. :D

I have a .22/.410, perfect small game gun. The .22 is on the money and consistant.

Just something to keep in mind, everyone thaat ever had one and sold it, regrets selling it.

CajunBass, I've never tried buckshot through my 24. Will have to do that. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm keeping my eyes open for a .22LR/.410 as a partner to my .22WMR/20 gauge. IMHO, the 24s are great small game guns.

As far as the rifle accuracy goes, I remember the older .22/.410 was a tack driver. My dads newer .222 version was scoped and also shot quite decent. Although, the trigger was a bit tough.

I have no idea how the .357 mag/20ga. I own shoots. I bought it well used and cheap, and have never fixed the stock crack or fired it.

Maybe dig it out and fix the stock, because it's been in the safe for a long time broken!

I bought a new 24 off of GB for $290.00 that has not been fired. It says its a series M. My buddy has one of the 22 mag over 410 versions. Mine is 22 mag over 20ga. I plan on doing some hunting with after deer season. Hope there are some rabbits left. The coyotes have realy been cleaning up judging from the hair patches we have been seeing. If you have a 22 mag and want a sub load you can use 22WRF. Winchester and CCI both load it.

I won one in junior high, from an FFA cheese and sausage sale (winning guns at school, does that date me?). It’s a 22lr/20ga, I even loaded it with 22cal pellets and starter blanks for a very quite pellet gun and just a powerful as a Benjamin at 10 pumps, its hard to find the right blanks though many just melt the pellet (22cb caps are also very quite). If you’ve got a box of 22’s, bird, buck and a slug or two there is not much you couldn’t do. It is quite accurate but resist the idea of putting a scope on it. The trigger is also quite firm but breaks cleanly. You can’t have it all as it does weigh more than just a 22 or single shot shotgun. Despite it’s drawbacks it’s the gun I grab to keep the water moccasins at bay, have around camp, and teach new shooters with and is the first one that pops into my mind when someone starts an “only one gun” thread.

What annoys me about these guns is that they don't come in what I consider the most versatile package: .22LR over 12 ga.

I know, people probably think it'd be weird having this tiny barrel ove the huge scattergun tube, but let's face it, it's more versatile. You can shoot the entire range of .22 Short, Long, Long rifle, and all the 12ga loads. Not that you need the additional power of the 12ga, but the load selection is far greater than with 20ga and the shells are cheaper as well.

I'd even go with .22 WMR over 12ga. You'd lose a lot of versatility that you have with a Long Rifle chamber, but magnums also tend to have less than an inch of rise above LOS at 50 yards with a 100 yard zero. Kinda nice, all you have to do is aim dead on to 100 yards. . .

notice that some jurisdictions will limit possession of rifles during shotgun seasons and perhaps the reverse as a deterrant to poachers who might claim to be bird hunting but would take a deer if offered.

Thus some so called Turkey guns cannot be used to take turkeys legally in some places.

Also have a 22 LR / 410 in an older Savage with the selector button
on the right side recevier. Also have a single barrel that fits it in
38/357 Mag.
