"...cheapo wooden arrows and powerful bows do not mix..." Wooden arrows need to be spine matched for the draw weight. Lots of people shoot 70 pound longbows with wooden arrows.
"...Shooting off the knuckle is pretty unique too..." Yep. The fletching will cut your hand. A glove fixes it.
Go to an archery shop and get fitted for a bow. It and the arrows has to fit you. Don't buy a bow with a draw weight that is heavier than the weight you can easily lift. If you can't easily lift a 50 pound box, you won't be able to safely shoot a bow of that draw weight either. You'll hurt yourself.

That's an excellent point and one worth repeating. I know a lot of you manly men want to shoot an exact replica of a Mary Rose longbow, but even if you don't hurt yourself, you'll never learn proper form (which can take years) if you blow a blood vessel in your eye every time you draw. Myself I am learning on a 45 pounder. I've been at it for a few months, and I have built enough strength that I could probably go 55 or 60, but my form needs work, and that must take precedence.

I don't wear a glove, abd everyone I know has been cut but me. I know it's coming, though...:D

Well I got the long bow that I ordered off E-Bay the day before yesterday and I messed around with it for several hours in the back yard, it's a little old and slightly beat up, but it works and it'll do for now. I also got one of those all in one Martin starter kits that had some arrows, a glove, a quiver and an arm brace.

After several hours of practice I'm not exactly ready to join Robin Hoods Merry Band or anything, but it's a start and I can at least hit a 12 inch by 12 inch box most of the time from 25 to 40 yards away most of the time. I can't say where it'll hit on that box, but I'll hit it for the most part. I didn't really get a chance to post anything about it yesterday as I was kind of busy after that and I only came on here for a short time.
