I own three guns made for hunting but I don't hunt or I don't hunt yet. I own an Remington 870 12ga which I shoot some clays with but I don't hunt birds. I own a Savage Model 99CD in 308WIN but I don't hunt deer or hogs. I own a Weatherby in 300WBY but I don't hunt elk or moose. I'm planning on using them for their intended purpose, one day. Well, if I ever get around to it, but if I don't I won't feel like I wasted anything in owning them.

So does anyone else shoot guns meant to be used for hunting and just punch paper? Or do you just find a pride in ownership and knowledge that you have the capabilty to hunt, one day. Or are you just trying to justify owning more guns than you need? I do a fair amount of that last one.

I haven't hunted in 20 years but still have a couple of hunting rifles, a hunting shotgun and 2 pistols meant for hunting. I don't know why I've kept them for so long, some haven't been fired in years although they stay well taken care of. Sentimental value I suppose, I'll probably never hunt again unless there's some kind of SHTF scenario and I can't buy food at the grocery store anymore.

I have a .30-30 just for the principle. Every red-blooded American should have one.

I hunt. But I own EBR's with no sporting purpose...supposedly.

I've killed deer with AK-47 clones. The deer apparently didn't realize that the shot came from a firearm with no sporting purpose. The deer laid down and died.

A friend used my Remington 700 PSS .308 with a Springfield 4X14 scope to kill a deer two years ago. One of those 'sniper' rifles. Deer died.

I had a buck stand off and look at me from about twenty yards. I only had my Glock 29. Shot him in the neck. Deer died.

Depending on distance, I don't think I own a firearm that is not capable of killing a whitetail deer...even the EBR's and concealed carry handguns.

All of the above...

In addition I've got a battle rifle, a rifle that shoots 7.62X39 and a number of handguns that would be good for hunting.

The only thing I've ever hunted was rabbit, squirrel and dove (as a kid). Never could get the hang of shooting a bird on the wing and until the last few years never lived anwhere I could hunt rabbit or squirrel.

Hope to go deer hunting with my son in law one of these days.

I've got a Benelli Nova that just gets used for clays. I could probably bring myself to shoot turkey one day, but that's it. Don't believe in shooting anything for sport.

Heh--that's a good one.

The gun-grabbing politicians got the surprise (to them) answer when they thought they could go after the non-hunting guns and found a huge segment of the population had guns but never hunted.

I personally like to be able to hunt with everything I own, but like Mr Quick says, deer will still die if shot with an AK.

I don't hunt with all my guns, but a lot of my guns have been hunting.

I've taken an AK in .223 hunting a few times (predator control, varminting). I've been known to carry a wide variety of handguns while hunting (because I can) i've been known to hunt with a handgun (small game and large) or even go after game with black powder rifles and shotguns.

I got 'into' guns because of hunting. It's still high on my list of priorities when I look for new guns.

Yeah, of course. I don't hunt, but have collected the family's guns.

As for punching paper with them, no not really. I did take my Savage 99 out and shoot a box of ammo just to say that I did, but other than that, no I don't shoot it much. There there is the Browning 16ga auto that I am waiting to shoot until I get some training in skeet. Then there are the multitudes of varmit guns and what nots that I have not shot since I was 10.....

I am an avid shooter but I have never been much of a hunter. I own an over and under Lanber my father left me when he died that I have shot since I was 12. I have killed one duck and a bizillion clay birds with it. I own a Ruger 10/22 that I've turned into a target rifle and just punch paper with it. I again have to agree with TarpelyG. I just bought a old Glenfield 30-30 from a guy I work with that was used and abused. I refinished and reblued it and added it to the collection. Just because I wanted it and he was offering a good price for it. Everyone needs to own at least one....... of everything!

I inherited several hunting rifles, but traded all but one for evil black type weapons.

I kept one 30-06 bolt action.

Never hunted in my life.

Thanks for the replies so far. And, yes most of my guns I guess are for use on people but I haven't had to and, God willing, won't have to ever use them for that purpose.

I do have to say the only thing I really want to hunt right now is feral hogs. They sound like the cape buffalo of Texas. Plus, they are ugly, and shouldn't be out in the enviroment in the first place, very destructive animals.

I've had quite a few deer wander up on me when I've been camping and I'm not sure if I would want to hunt them for sport. Its the eyelashes. Now if one was breaking into my house in the middle of the night, its a different story. :D

Gulo, your start to this thread applies to me. I own a Rem700 in .308 but have not hunted deer with it 'yet.' Someday...

My varmit rifles and shotguns have all been used for the intended purposes.

I dunno why, but my first thought was "yeah, it makes sense wanting to shoot at those noisy Harley riders ... but why admit it in a public forum?"

I have a Marlin .30-30 that's marketed and traditionally used as a hunting gun. I don't hunt with it. The only thing I'm interested in hunting is squirrel or rabbit, or maybe waterfowl, and a .30-30 isn't suited for that. I own it because my father has one and I've always wanted one of my own, and it's cowboyish.

What would you classify someone as who has firearms that are made for hunting, Buys a license, takes ‘em in the woods, but comes home “buckless” every year?

yeah, that would be me. :p

I have all sorts of hunting guns.

Without being forced into some stereotypical role, these are my deer rifles of choice for the interim:

If Bambi's out there past 200 yards, I'll use this hunting gun:

If I kill it then I have to take it home and find someone who will eat it. :) No, I just go target shooting but still own a deer rifle and a shotgun. The rest are AR's, M1's and 5 handguns.

What do you classify as a 'hunting' gun? Most guns have many purposes. Most of what I would classify as a 'hunting' gun, could just as easily be a target gun, or a plinking gun, or something else.

My 10/22 is a plinking gun. As well a squirrel gun.
My Rem 700 is not only a deer gun, but a sniper and target gun.
My Rem 870 is not only a duck gun, but a trap gun. And a police gun.
Ruger 22/45? Great rabbit gun, and my bullseye pistol.

About the only thing I can say that I have that is strictly used for hunting, is my blackpowder gun.

But I like hunting. Preferably Duck and Turkey.
