Looooovveee mine, moa capable, cool conversion, dogleg rail up top. about to add a tri rail saiga forearm up front, and add a light and a laser, for total ninja/tacti/coolness. I got mine, long ago, back when they were 250 or so.
At least here in Houston, they are back down to 300 bucks a pop...

What kind of mags are available for .223 AK-types?

I have a conversion in x39 only, so I haven't seen the other side of the Saiga world at all.

If it's 922r friendly (one in the video is not), then Galil, Weiger, Bulgarian, and Surefire to name some. Also AR-15 mags with adapter.

Surefire makes good ones that you don't need a bullet guide for, and they have a last-round-bolt-hold-open feature. They're a bit pricey, though.

On those surefire mags, does the bolt stay open when the magazine is removed?

I like the way they look in original unconverted configuration with the factory short mag. Great for hunting in close range setting.

So if one uses a Surefire 30 rder mag, it would render it illegal (from BATF 922 r regs?). Thats a bummer . ..

BTW, aside from Classicarms.us, who has them in stock at a good price ? Thanks

No. Kalashnikov's aren't designed with a BHO mechanism.

couple of things; your saiga may have a last shot bho lever; also your mag may do it, I have plenty of promag, surefire mags, and they all work nicely. the surefires are better though, but I could not pass up the price on the promags i got. Also, it is the mag, that generally speaking does the last shot bho for you; not all saigas were made the same, so you just have to see on yours whether they will hold open or not. Also, if your rifle is unconverted, I do not see why it makes any diff, for 922r purposes, if you use a hi cap mag, that is american made, by promag, surefire, megamolder, etc., since they are additional american parts.

The Saiga BHO lever is a MANUAL one...the bolt does not stay open on the last shot without a raised mag follower as found on the Surefire.

Great rifle.

I have one that I would like to set up for a scope and use for some medium range shooting. Does anyone have some part numbers or suggested websites to find the options I am looking for?

Also, does anyone have the same problem with dinged brass when firing?

Tim

Most all AKs ding brass. Heard someone uses door-edge molding on the ejection port to minimize or eliminate the dents. I don't think its a problem. If anything, I would be more concerned about tearing of the case rim. Most folks just shoot Russian steel-cased ammo.

The Saiga forum has links to numerous parts/accessories websites:http://forum.saiga-12.com/

Also Eastwave Optics and Kalinka Optics has various scopes/mounts to fit the Saiga rail mount.

yes - the surefire saiga mags have a hold open feature on empty mag. However when you pull the mag out, the bolt closes. It's more so you know you are empty. Standard AK mag (which requires bullet guide add-on on the Saiga), there is no bolt hold open feature.

exactly; on the last mag responses, they will hold open, but when you take mag out, close it goes.
m1key; you can get a diff bolt handle/assy, and a diff top cover, that will allow the case to eject freely, and not ding the brass. check over on Saiga12.com for the mods.

I'd love to. Being that it's not an AR and is accurate. But it has one fatal flaw:

.223 is nearly forty cents a cartridge in my area. One 30 magazine is twelve bucks.

7.62x39 wins for hobby shooters like me for that sole reason.

The .223 Saiga is a good reliable rifle that's well worth the money. Unconverted, the trigger's heavy, but it is consistent and you can get used to it. On the four Saigas I'm familiar with, 2-3 MOA accuracy from the bench is normal, so you'd best look elsewhere for a varmit rifle. There's a lot of metal (bolt and bolt carrier) that starts moving before the bullet leave the muzzle. I think this aspect of the gun's design affects its accuracy potential.

The chrome lined barrel and chamber will let you shoot most anything and, unless you shoot corrosive ammo, you needn't worry about keeping it clean.

I shoot cheap steel-cased Russian ammo. Best I've seen lately is .223 Tula 62 gr. FMJ. $240/1000 here in NY. The Saiga eats it up.

Samx; is yours converted? if not, this helps with the weight , because generally the buttstock you replace with, is a tad heavier, and then the pistol grip deff helps to even out the balance, just by gripping it...
