I was in a local store today and noticed one of the Mossberg SS1 single shot rifles which they had marked down on clearance. Looked to be similar to a Ruger, with a nice walnut stock and a schnabel forend. They had one in both 223 and 308, and for the price it seemed like a lot of gun for the money. I've heard some of the NEF single shots are tack drivers, but haven't heard mention of the Mossbergs. Just curious if anyone here would recommend them or pass on them. BTW, I'm talking in the $250 range.

I have one in 30-06 and it is as accurate as any other factory I have. The trigger was a bit stiff till I polished the engagment surfaces and shot it some and then it smoothed out and is somewhat lighter. I just wish I could buy extra barrels for it, Mossberg charges too much for them. Bottom line is I really like mine.

The guy at the store was saying the same thing about the barrels being too expensive. Cheaper to just buy the whole thing. One thing I noticed about them is that they seem kind of heavy, but fairly well balanced. I didn't try to break open the action or try the trigger (had one of the trigger locks in place) buy I was wondering how smoothe they might be.

I just got around to getting a scope on mine(.308----Burris FF II 3x9x40 Ballistic plex---Leupold QRW rings) the other day----its one sweet rig---esp considering the cheap price paid.
The trigger feels pretty much like a Mini-14 trigger---it should smooth up in time--but will never be a target trigger or anything-----doesn't bother me because I only paid $230 for this NIB rifle----you can't beat that.
Now to find time to go shoot it----been concentrating efforts lately on the "precious" (AR)------and to aquireing yet another "precious"---mine mine mine!!!

Must be the Galyan's special-------I bought one---never shot it and wound up using it for a trade on Sako75----they gave me more in trade than what I paid for it-----so was all good to me----lol.
I ended up buying one of these, and yes it was a Galyans special. I could hardly pass up a NIB rifle for under $200 out the door. Mine is in 223 cal , but so far I haven't taken it out to shoot. The rifle needs a scope and haven't taken the time to mess with it. M1 Garands are taking up most of my time and money at the moment.

Have owned and shot the SS#1 for over three years now and have not had a single problem. Bought the .223 with standard barrel and later scoped it with a Redfield 3x9. Did what one of the other posters stated, burnished the surfaces of the seer and trigger seems much smoother. Shoots.50 to .75groups at 100 yards with reloads and 1 to 1.5 with 5.56 surplus. Incidentally, you should be able to use 5.56 as long as it is NOT NATO stamped on the case. I have put well over 100 rounds through mine without a problem. Love to carry 40 or 50 rounds of .223 in a small leather belt pouch.

Talk about a blast from the past, it's hard to believe this post is so old. Fact of the matter is, I still have not shot this rifle. After re-reading the original post I'm kind of bummed that I didn't get the 308 instead, although as things stand now with ammo prices all I can afford to shoot are 22's. (22 long rifle,not 223)

WOW!!!! for 250 , that is absolutely stealing!!!! yes , they are well built, and beautiful, and you could easily spend 500 bucks on that, By the way, what is the name/ where is that store? If they got more than one, I would dig one.

This is now 2 years later for this thread and I got a SS1 in the box "out the door" for $175.00
