So I'm thinking of getting a cross chest holster for my 629/29 for when out hiking and hunting. Have to imagine it's an easier method of carry then any other option when out in the woods. If you have carried this way what did you think? Also, what holster did you go with? I'd rather go leather then some of the Kydex options I've seen but there are lots of options out there. Any suggestions would be beneficial.

Used them for years. Diamond W chest rig. Their in Alaska.
Both working in the hills, timber or about anywhere else im sold on the concept. With limited acreage on the waistline using a big buttpack this worked perfectly when going hunting.
I used the full flap version, which was also removable and it afforded lots of protection for the smith .45 i habitually carried.

While not a true across the chest holster, The old school military "Tanker" rigs work well for that sort of carry. El Paso Saddlery does a good job of them too. I have a number of their hosters for a general/special use sort of thing for different guns. They are real handy for a second, special use gun you just want to throw on and bring along.

This one is for 4" K/L frames....

Have one for my Governor too....

Ive been using this one for the Glock I use as a practice gun and of all of them, it gets daily use.

I've used a Simply Rugged pancake holster with the Chesty Puller harness to carry my Redhawk. Honestly it's not that great. It's okay, but I'm guessing there are better options.

The El Paso Saddlery 1942 holster, a type generally referred to as the “tanker” style, is a quite comfortable way to tote a large handgun. I have them, for the 1911, and SAA-type revolvers.

Mernickle Leather makes a nice chest rig, but I only have the holster body, bought pre-owned, cheaply, without the harness, so, I cannot say how well the harness part works. I rigged a camera strap, to wear it across-the-chest. (I already had Mernickle belt holsters, so knew what to expect, regarding quality.)

I use the galco Kodiak holster with the relief for a scope. I can very comfortably and securely stow my ruger super redhawk 7.5" /w 4x28 Leupold scope. It's a really, really nice holster.

I use one for my Ruger Redhawk . Diamond D Guides Choice . Very nice high quality chest holster .

I too use the Diamond D leather Guide's Choice, made in Alaska. I got it for my various 4" N-Frame revolvers (used for hunting back-up) as the rig does not get in the way of my backpack waist belt as a standard belt holster would. I used to have a regular holster affixed to my backpack waist strap, but the chest rig is better as I can drop the pack and still have my sidearm. They are not cheap, but well worth the cost.

DF89CCEC-C6FD-4AA6-A3FD-5E6C5493BCA0.jpeg Galco makes a nice one called the Kodiak. The cool thing about that is you can adjust it while it’s on ya. I like it low above my left hip almost like a cross draw. Yet with a pull of the strap it’s up by my Chest if need for back pack belt room.
I can carry all day and not be uncomfortable. Need to get the cartridge loops sleeve for it. A scope open top model is also available.

My SIL and I use a Diamond D Leather Guide's Choice Leather Chest Holster (https://www.diamonddcustomleather.com/products/guides-choice-chest-holster) for our Alaskans .44 Mags. We each have the "Reload 41/44/454/6-Round" accessory (https://www.diamonddcustomleather.com/products/guides-choice-reload).

When speaking with the manager at Diamond D, she recommended the "Reload 6-Round" over speedloader pouches because the speedloader pouches are very bulky and the leather strap goes through the middle of the speedloader pouch and not in the back of the speedloader pouch. Thus, she said the speedloader pouch will dig into the chest and feel uncomfortable.

In addition, we each ordered extra strap screws (https://www.diamonddcustomleather.com/products/assortment-of-extra-screws).

+1 for the Tanker. keeps the gun in the perfect spot for quick access while keeping it out of the way if you're also carrying a pack, binoculars, or need to shoulder a rifle.

I carried my Glock 20 in an gunfighter chest holster while not my 629 it's still a good sized handgun. I loved having the pistol in the chest rig it slid behind my binoculars enough to be mostly out of the way but enough grip exposed to be readily accessible. It never interfered with my large backpack. It was very good holster.

From the Images- I see Many 4” length wheel guns. I like my 6” & 6.5” for the added velocity and sight radius.
For Defense against 4 legged friends I dont think a extra 2” would slow my draw and trigger time on target by much more then a 1/4 a second or less.

Regarding the OP, What barrel length you have ? @ RockRivr1

I've got a gunfighters Inc Kenai chest holster that fits a super redhawk.its a kydex holster and the straps have a little stretch, overall it's an excellent holster but I don't use it a lot. I appreciate that it can carry a heavy revolver without any discomfort, chose this one specifically because it wasn't leather. Nothing against leather and I have a lot of good leather but it stays wet longer , weighs more and takes additional care to maintain . I got the Kenai holster specifically for camping/hiking when I will only have 1 firearm and I want to keep it close for potentially several days out in the elements. I'm happy with it, YMMV

Did you mean “speedloader pouch”?
