Anyway for an 18 year old to shoot in or near NYC?

Every service requires a degree for commissioning. If you want to go shooting that's one thing and shooting in the USMC is another. The Marines have always taught their people how to shoot a rifle. I wouldn't worry about that as they have taken millions of people who never touched a firearm qualify expert. You are better off exerting your energy in PT, running, pull ups, situps, and push ups. Those are the things that will kill you if you aren't prepared. I was an Army guy with over 40 years AD, Guard, and Reserve.

A friend of mine's son became a SEAL. After he was accepted for training (that includes the 5 mile ocean swim and 10 mile run). He wanted me to teach him to shoot (I've been a police firearms instructor for over 40 years and taught people everything from a 22 to an 8 inch howitzer). I told him I would give him a taste but he was better off waiting for the Navy to teach him. That's what we did and he's been on a team for about a year. In another year, he'll be teaching me stuff I don't know.

I understand that the way I worded my original post may have made it sound like I'm joining the Marines solely to shoot and that is absolutely NOT true and has nothing to do with it. I decided to join the military for a variety of reasons, nothing to do with guns. Trust me.

I have a perfect PFT score at the moment, maxing out at 300. I PT with either my recruiting station or on my own. I'm also running at 0600 everyday. Without trying to sound too full of myself, I'm in amazing physical shape, but of course there's always room for improvement.

Thank you for your concern though, I understand that many people jump into it without preparing or knowing what's to come. I'd never do that with anything in life, let alone a big commitment like the military.

Peconic River Sportsman's Club -- they sponsor a NY National Guard (think it used to be official but now under a Sgt. Major Considine but is only "structured" now) Small Arms Firing School in April usually and have guns and ammo available especially for youth. Pay. Two days. Stay at hotel or camp. If you need an AR vs. a Garand arrange in advance but tell them your story...

I feel horrible, as I completely forgot to thank you for choosing to serve our country. I have 2 Son's in the Armed Forces, one is in USMC for the last 16 years, the other is ANG for 11 years, and both have been to the middle east, Afghanistan and Iraq. And thank the Lord, both came home in one piece, despite the enemies attempt to get them with IED's, mortar, small arms, and you name it. But we do have the finest Americans, the best trained individuals, and the best prepared military on the planet.

So God Bless you for offering your self, so I may live free!
