I have a Remy 870 Express I want to chop down and turn into a pistol grip only shotgun.
The shotgun when purchased came with full shoulder stock.

I know of a firearms manufacturer that will chop it and transfer it to me as an AOW for $50 bucks. All I have to do is pay the $5 right?

Thanks everyone

Might be better to consult someone who really knows the law re. AOWs vs. SBSs... seems there are some differences of opinion out there. And this is not an area where you want to make a mistake.

SHORT BARREL SHOTGUNS (SBS) and ANY OTHER WEAPON (AOW)

NOTE: Prices quoted do not include Federal Transfer Tax or any applicable state sales tax

Short-Barreled Shotgun (SBS) - Any shotgun that was originally equipped with a shoulder stock, but has a barrel less than 18" in length (as measured from the face of the closed bolt to the end of the permanent muzzle) or an overall length less than 26". The Federal Transfer tax on a SBS is $200. We can covert most customer provided shotguns starting at retail of $325 for 15" pumps and some 12"- 13" pumps, $425 for most 12" or shorter pumps, $375 for 14"-15" semiautos, and $375 for double barrels ($425 with pistol grip).

Any Other Weapon (AOW) - Any National Firearms Act (NFA) firearm not otherwise categorized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as a short-barreled rifle, modern shoulder-stocked pistol, short-barreled shotgun, machine gun, sound suppressor (silencer), or destructive device. Included in the list of AOWs are firearms disguised so they are not readily recognizable as firearms, such as pen guns, cane guns, and wallet holsters that hide the outline of the firearm and allow it to be fired while holstered. Also included are pistols with both front and rear pistol grips, handguns with smooth bore barrels less than 18" in length and intended to fire shotgun shells; and combination rifle/shotguns with barrels over 12" but under 18", provided each chamber is single shot and only can be manually reloaded. The Federal Transfer tax on an AOW is $5.

What does it mean? It means a manufacturer can turn a gun such as a Mossberg Cruiser (comes with pistol grip only) into an AOW by shortening the barrel to less than 18". The buyer pays the $5 tax when purchasing it. The manufacturer cannot turn any shoulder-stocked shotgun or even a kit gun (a shotgun that comes with both a pistol grip and shoulder stock) into an AOW. Such guns, if shortened to less than 26" overall or fitted with a barrel under 18", must be registered as a SBS, which means the $200 transfer tax must be paid by the buyer. The advantage of the SBS is that it can be configured with either a shoulder stock or pistol grip. With the exception stated in the paragraph above, most AOWs can have only a pistol grip - not a shoulder stock.

Wow, as Lee stated, that can only be an SBS.

May I suggest - file a form 1, engrave it, and buy a hacksaw and file? It turns out well, and you retain the option of a buttstock. Mostly, my 12" barreled 870 has a buttstock. Pert near worthless for anything but playing around without one.

yeah, I just didnt want to pay that high price and still have 4shells in the tube.

Remy 870 $250
labor to cut barrel $50
pistol grip $30
AOW tax $5

Buy a used 870P for ~$150, a new hacksaw for $10, a new metal file for $8, the proper SpeedFeed grip set for $30 or so, and the $200 tax stamp. Honestly, having one transferred in is more of a pain than making what you can. :)
