Three sentenced for mob beating

Saturday, June 28, 2003 Posted: 9:29 AM EDT (1329 GMT)

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- A teen identified by prosecutors as most responsible for the fatal mob beating of a Milwaukee man last year was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Two other defendants were also sentenced Friday.

Authorities said an altercation on the street led a gathering mob of young people to chase down Charlie Young Jr., 36, and beat him to death with broomsticks, shovels, a milk crate and other items the night of Sept. 29. He died a month later.

Marlin Dixon, 15, charged with first-degree reckless homicide, was the most culpable of the more than a dozen defendants in the case, prosecutors say. He was sentenced by Milwaukee County Circuit Judge John Franke to 18 years in prison and 22 years of extended supervision in the community.

Warren Townes, 20, charged with second-degree reckless homicide, was far less involved in the melee, the judge said, giving him a sentence of three years in prison and seven years' extended supervision.

In another hearing that followed, the judge sentenced a third youth involved in the mob beating, Artieas Shanks, as a juvenile. Shanks, who was 13 at the time of the beating, was given two years in the custody of the Department of Youth Services.

Civilians don't need to carry guns to protect themselves. The police will be there for you. You certainly don't need a "high capacity"(normal capacity) magazine to defend yourself from multiple attackers.

Ugh.

Most of the "youths" have already plea-bargained their offenses down to levels where they'll only be serving a couple of years, if even that.
