'Tween swamp and sun!
If we're going to use the "responsible gun owner" argument, we've got to be RESPONSIBLE!!!!! To think that this happened at a gun show, involving a vendor who should know better just makes it that much worse. :banghead:

Let's face it, no one is perfect. BUT in this climate, we NEED to rise above and not give any fuel to the argument. What's done is done, but for anyone who has never had such an incident, work hard to keep it that way. For those who have, please do what it takes to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Bob Beckel, the liberal on Fox News' "The Five" mentioned this in today's show, deriding it as representative of the NRA and all gun owners.
That guy is positively infuriating.
Yes the guy at the gun show who shot that lady ought to have cleared the gun first, as well as made sure he wasn't pointing it at anyone.
I hope he learns a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.

But Beckel is still annoying .....

Beckel is highly paid to be annoying.

And he is succeeding! :D He is beyond reach!
He truly does hate the NRA. That is no act there. Absolutely despises the organization. He starts to screech, he drools and his eyes water when those 3 initials come up.

Musta been some heavy past trauma!

just stupid, really stupid, damn stupid. as you and I know all firearms are loaded. even when they aren't. stupid

Gun show; area.....

I grew up near the same area in central PA.
In the 1970s/1980s, it wasn't uncommon to see pick-ups with gun racks or for people to wear safety orange as a fashion statement.
I was going to post a remark about this same gun show incident.
You can not be lax or casual about gun safety.
The gun show organizer told the media he'd never had any NDs or loaded gun problems before.
Checking a firearm for safety isn't rocket surgery :uhoh:.
If you don't know how to safely clear or inspect a firearm, then don't touch it.
Also, open the action or clear it before you hand it to another person. It's a safe habit to get into & prevents accidents.

There are a lot of people who think that if a gun is "unloaded", it's OK to be careless where the muzzle points. A lot of those same people aren't big on keeping their finger off the trigger when handling an "unloaded" gun, either. Not sure if that's what happened in this case, but it's a good reminder that the Four Rules do not have a "Don't Worry, It's Unloaded" exception.

You cannot control anybody but yourself and there are idiots in all persuasions and walks of life.

Why give fuel to the anti's by making such a big thing out of an accident. the antis disregard doctors killing tens of thousand thru mistakes. Over 25000 in car accidents. If the woman got run over by a car in the parking lot at the gun show would that be a story? You are playing into the antis making like getting hurt or dying from a gun is 500 times worse then burning to death drowning getting crushed by a tree getting dragged down the block under a bus getting cut in half by a train etc

Maybe this article, where a LEO does the deed, will help drown out Bob's drooling's. We must always remember he is an idiot, irregardless of his political persuasion.

A Sweetwater,Florida police officer was recovering Monday after his holstered gun discharged and hit him in the leg while he was chasing shoplifting suspects at Dolphin Mall.

The officer, Joel Bosque, was responding to a shoplifting report at the mall when he was injured. He was taken to the hospital and is “doing fine,” police spokesman Jorge Fernandez de Lara said.

Bosque, who has been with the department for a year, will likely be placed on administrative leave while Miami-Dade police investigate.

The incident happened on Sunday after four suspects took off through the sprawling mall, 11401 NW 12th St., from the Burlington Coat Factory.

Sorry but I don't get your point.

Cops can be stupid too with gun handling.. Does that help you, amigo? ;)

If not call,911-Red Wind. I'll immediately give personal assistance.
Erath County,Texas is on my beat. :D

I do not see enough evidence here that the cop

was "stupid." We do not know exactly what happened so saying the officer was stupid is a big jump in my opinion.

^ I am only 70 miles south, Moe. I'll keep my antenna pealed and report any new developments if stupidity, clumsiness, bad luck or just pure karma caused this Sweetwater Officer to get shot with his holstered gun in the leg.

And, I did not say the officer was stupid in gun handling. I put up a supposition. Time will hopefully tell the full story . Just be patient and stay tuned. I hope I am not asking too much? :scrutiny:

Promise. :) And Moxie, too!

My point is that pointing out that cops can handle guns in an unsafe manner, in addition to civilians, is not likely to make our Mr. Beckel feel any better. He's just going to say that this proves that no one can handle guns properly. Therefore, they should all be confiscated. That is his end game.

As we see from the comments on this police site
other cops are raising the BS flag. Typical cop comments on the story:

I hope the Officer didn't do what some are thinking and made something up. If you made a mistake, you made a mistake. As for as holsters go....I do miss my BlackHawk serpa double retention duty holster....I've traded it in for the Safari Land "hood" one. It's okay tho.

if he had owned it he might have got away with only a hole in his leg and a bruised ego. now i suspect he has made it far worse. you can do many things on this job and survive but false and misleading statements isn't one of them. gun just went off....... yea right.

You foul up,admit it. He'll get over it with time.

As to Beckel, nothing can help this ex dipso druggie. How he got this lucrative Fox gig is beyond my reckoning. Must have called in some really heavy markers.

A Smart-Carry rep at an outdoor show I attended swept my wife, myself, and probably a few dozen other people with his muzzle during his "Big reveal" that he was concealing a pistol in his crotch. As I had been lecturing my wife all afternoon on proper handling, even of the display pistols the manufacturers had at the show, I was aghast that someone demonstrating a carry system would break such a fundamental rule of carrying/handling.

I get uncomfortable when I get swept with a "Blue Gun" in training classes.

Stuff happens, but the vendor should have been more vigilant when handling a loaded gun inside a gunshow. Always check to make sure the chamber is clear, period. Guns aren't supposed to be loaded inside shows unless it is your legal carry piece and they stay in the holster. People are people and they make mistakes.

From the article...

“Stupid mistake, honest mistake, I guess. I wouldn’t do it,” said Pat Bower of South Williamsport.

That is also a problem. No one is above safety - anyone can do it. Anyone.

Mistakes and weird things happen. Distractions occur, or lapses in judgment. It is important to always be diligent and admit that yes, even YOU can make a stupid and honest mistake with a gun. They are not the kind of thing you want to make a mistake with.

There are 300 million Americans and counting. Think of what we mean by a "million to one shot" and then think about a "300 million to one shot". Sure there's lots of kids in that number but kids as young as 2 or 3 can cause gun problems as we all know. Gun accidents are no more prevalent than car accidents and no one wants to ban cars. Guns do a great deal for us and we sometimes have to take the good with the bad because doing without is a worse scenario. Do we want to go back to an era when might makes right and wild animals can dominate humans who stray off the beaten paths? I sure don't. I'll tell you my rabid fox story some day. Guns are our friends. I'll tell you about my mother running off a rapist with dad's shotgun too. Don't ask me to give up my guns because some idiot made a mistake. I would no sooner do that than give up my car because someone died behind the wheel in one of the 200 million or so cars on the roads in America.

Miami-Dade County PD....

To my limited knowledge, Miami-Dade County PD, which was called Dade County Metro PD for a few years had a formal SOP for new sworn personnel/field training status officers that they had to carry a 4" .38spl 6 shot DA only K frame revolver for the first 12mo on duty or until they were cleared by their supervisors. Then the officers could tote Glocks or the other approved weapons.
The PD cut the regulations about 2002/2004 & all new officers got Glocks.

Rusty
PS; fun fact; Dade County Metro was the LE agency in NBC's hit crime series, Miami Vice. Not Miami or Miami Beach PD as many viewers thought.

Where I like we use "blue or brown plastic guns" to demonstrate different types of holsters. There are no loaded weapons allowed except for law enforcement present at the shows.
