Just finished watching Guns & Ammo TV and the DPMS AR-10-type rifle in .338 Federal. It got me to thinking....

There are several AR-15 uppers that shoot .40+ caliber rounds (.450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM, etc.). Is anyone developing a .40+ caliber round for the AR-10 platform? Esp. on the .308 case?

Thanks in advance..... :D

How about the even bigger AR variants? Like the Bushmaster (formerly Cobb) .338 Lapua. I hear they're going to make it in .416 Rigby too.

Does the ejection port have to be opened up on the upper receiver to do a .450 Marlin conversion? I'm about to have enough spare parts laying around to build up another LR-308.

Teppo Jutsu had a "500 Phantom" round for the AR-10, allowing bullets up to 750 grains to be slung downrange. According to their website, though, they'e dropped it due to inability to get brass produced or something like that. They do still have the tooling to make them, though.

How about an AR-10 in 45-70? It would be so poetic since the .45-70 was the first metallic cartridge adopted (widely) by the US Army. Sort of a full-circle kinda thing.

And it's a heck of a thumper.

The 450 Marlin was designed to equal maximum .45-70 loads. Marlin did it so that guys who wanted their 1895 to perform but didn't want to handload or custom order ammunition could have their cake and eat it to. This was before the days of Buffalo Bore and other's high performance ammunition, when virtually all factory .45-70 was made to be safe for use in trapdoor springfileds and the like.

The 450 Marlin slings 400 grain pills at over 2,000 FPS.
