it seems like the .223 and the like are the most popular. is there any advantage to the 7.62x39? will it increase accuracy at greater distance?

.223 is a flatter shooter than 7.62x39. 7.62x39 drops pretty significantly past 300 yards. The advantages of the 7.62x39 round are that it is cheap, has good terminal ballistics, and is currently plentiful. In an 7.62x39 AR-15 style rifle the major problem is finding reliable magazines. The new C-products mags solve this problem in theory, but I still see it as a weakness.

If you are looking for accuracy in a standard AR-15 platform, look at 6.5 Grendel.

7.62x39 is problematic because of a poor selection of bullets available for handloading.

thers 5.45,5.56,6.5,6.8, 7.62X39,7.62X51, 9mm, 10mm
.22lr, .222, .40, .45,.458 SOCOM, .50 AE, .50 Beowolf

and more...
if you want cheap you have 2 options.
buy a .223 and a 22lr conversion kit this obviously gives you 5.56 performance when you need it, .22lr cheap when you dont
or
hunt down a 5.45 upper and buy alot of surplus ammo ASAP. decent performer. cheap right now.
