AR-15 for Deer Hunting???

OK, first off, energy does not matter nearly as much as bullet type and weight. With a little .22 caliber, or anything to be used on big game for that matter, bullet choice is vital. I don't really feel like discussing what I think would be good, partly because I wouldn't use a .223 for deer. Furthermore, there are already plenty of people on here giving suggestions for bullets. I will say that I would go "tough" with your bullet choice, which alleviates most hollow-points.

Called FWC today to see if .223 was legal for deer, the officer I spoke to said .22 hornet and up was legal. Of course he advised me to use something better but I was surprised when he said .22 hornet.

Another example of the lack of power. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVlrSVsAdpI&NR=1 they shot that poor piggy 7 times with an AR15 including at leased 3 good head shots. Not exactly up to par with with conventional hunting rifles for quick killing power. Mind you the hog was pretty well done after the fourth or fifth shot the last two were just an effort to make it quick kicking. They say that hog was 300lbs but he looked under 200 to me, but what do I know.

So NELSONs02 what is your point?

No point, just thought I'd post the video.

What is pretty well documented?

The contents of the video.

Personally I really don't give a crap about the contents as I do not hunt with a .223, nor do I want to.

Why don't you chill out and realize no one wants to waste their time arguing about all this .223 stopping power/deer hunting hoopla.

Use something bigger. I believe it is a hunter's responsiblity to do whatever possible within reason to make a clean kill. There are other rounds out there in the AR platform with a much higher probability of a clean kill.

The Remmington Reduced Recoil 30-30 round feels (to me and two of my friends) similar to a semi-auto 223. If you've got a lever action in 30-30 that would be another route to go. I think it's something like 125 grains and I forget the 100 yard ft pounds of energy.

Though a small buck (we weed out the "cowhorns"), I took this one at 125 yards with a Winchester Ranger 64gr 223 round. DRT. Spine or neck shots work well if you do your part. I took another one that weekend with the Ranger also.

In my state it is legal to hunt deer with an AR as long as you only use a magazine that can hold no more than 5 rounds. I would only advise hunting doe with an AR though. Wouldnt buck hunt with such a small round. The best deer ammo in .223 is Federal Fusion in my book. I used my FN SCAR last year on a doe just as a novelty. Put it down with one shot @ 80 meters.

I killed a nice medium sized doe with a through and through shot through the boiler room at about 200 yards last year. With my AR in 223.

30-06 and 8mm are my deer cartridges of choice but the 223 will work provided the bullet is placed with great precision.

Use a heavy for caliber bullet. If you can find a 65-69 grain soft point that is not designed for varmints, she should be just fine.

.223 rem is a great deer round. The ar rounds today are very different from the rounds in 1965 when the AR was introduced.
I use TSX 70gr extremely deadly.
For those places where they do not allow I use my 6x45 (6mm-223rem) that shoots harder and flatter than the 7.62x39 russian uppers and 6.8SPC.
6mm TSX are very lethal. Now I am testing with the swift bullets.
Cheers.
