I was just curious. Which companies make the AR-15? Whats the price range of these guns? Anything else about them I should know about? I hope to purchase one... sometime during my lifetime.

Also, whats the name of a gun thats made by several companies? Like the 1911, Ar-15, AK, etc? Is there a specific name for the type of gun it is?:scrutiny:

1) Search will answer most of these questions

2) Here's a few, in rough order of price: Stag, DPMS, Bushmaster, CMMG.

3) Prices: everything from $500ish up to $1200 for basic models. If you shop really carefully and assemble your own with used parts, you can _maybe_ get an AR for under $500.

4) Such firearms are usually called by their generic names, like you listed, or by the manufacturer's specific name: "Colt Sporter" "DPMS AP-15C", etc. Some folks refer to any such rifle not made by its original manufacturer as a "clone".

AR like the 1911 design is public domain if that's what you're refering to. With regard to companies, there are too many to list really. Not to mention, that most use uppers/lowers from several other manufacturers to assemble their rifles.

Not really. Patent protection is good for 20 years and the AR was patented by Fairchild/Armalite in the mid-1950's. Once the patent protection expired in the mid 70's, anyone and everyone was free to copy the design to their heart's content. And plenty have.

I built a 20" AR with a collapsible stock for roughly 750 bucks. The breakdown is like so:

DPMS A-15 lower: 120 dollars at a gun show in Dallas
Del-Ton flat-top 20" rifle kit w/ collapsible stock: 550 dollars
Cavalry Arms rear sight and XS same-plane aperture: 80 bucks

= 750 dinero...s.. uh..

I also had to pick up about 80 bucks in tools (50 for a punch set + roll pin punches, 30 for a special wrench), but they'll be good for this and all the other ARs I plan to build.

I got a pile of excellent 20-round mags from C Products for about ten dollars each.

Hope it helps..
