i wont comment on the issue, because i have limited experience with the AR style and no experience with the AK's but i will say: here we go again!

Get 'em both! Any AR will be more accurate than any AK. Any AK will be more reliable than any AR.

Which is more important to you?

The 7.62x39 AK ammo is a bit cheaper than 5.56 for the AR, but this could quickly change with an executive order banning ammo importation.

AK because gun and ammo is cheaper. In fact, get two AKs while you're at it. You won't be disappointed.

JoeJoe...this gets done every week. Ultimately you'll have to get what you want. Both have a lot to offer. Try doing a search to find out what those are and how they will specifically apply to whay you want and need in a rifle.

I personally choose an AK (converted Saiga with quick release side mount and red-dot.) I did all the work and by shopping around I picked up everything for about $425.

Reasons:

1) I love guns and shooting but my guns are to be shot and I would get pissed to bang around a really nice AR. They are much nicer and I would not want to mess it up. I was also able to get a great gun in my AK and an AR would have cost me three times as much to get the same quality for price. I also have no real worry about "issues" coming up with the gun.

2) With the red-dot and hand-loaded rounds it is accurate enough for it's role. If I need precision it would be a bolt action in .308. My range doesn't go farther than 200 yards and it keeps groups upper torso with a prone or sitting position. Leads me to believe the ability to hit upper body on a human out to 300 or 350 yards is in the rifles capability.

3) My rifles are in 7.62x39 and .308. I can reload both with the same .308 diameter bullet making purchasing easier and cheaper. Krochus (sp?) has certainly proved there is no loss in accuracy by doing this.

4) I feel in the event of a situation resulting in the need for a rifle it will be pretty major. Many are oof the opinion that an AR wins here because of parts and ammo matching our service weapons. I figure if it gets to that point there will be many "battlefield pickups" to acquire for that role. It might ecen pay to have one that is different to give options.*

If I had money to spend on it I would and if we are able to I would love an AR in 20in old school configuration and 16 in. with collapsible stock and red-dot. To much monye know so I go the economical route.

*I was a boyscout so i'm always prepared as much as I can be but in reality I can't ever see needing more than a hi-cap 9mm with mags and a 8-shot riot 12 gauge and sack of shells given my familiarity with the weapons and my area's layout. It would have to be a cataclysmic situation to not have to worry about letting off an AK and hitting innocents where I live. If a rifle as a home defense weapon is an option I would have an AR, at least the 16in model to go along with my Ak.

Probably been asked many times. I'm about to get both.

Your thoughts?

Depends on your needs. Although the rifles are intended to be infantry rifles the philosophy difference in design and usage gives to an apples to oranges comparison.

I own both in different configurations. You have to decide what your needs are and what is important to you. I find that both rifles excel at opposite ends of the spectrum whereas the AR15 is hands down superior in long range shooting and anything involving accuracy while my AKs tend to be far superior in the role of SBRs. I do feel that every AW collection should have both an AR15 and an AK as they are truly worthy to be there.

ar

because i like accurate rifles.

in defense of the ak, and contrary to popular belief, you CAN hit the broad side of a barn with an ak.

if you try it from inside the barn.

I prefer the technical aspects of my ARs, but I don't trust them like I do my AK...yet.

AK, because I'm an American Revolutionary Patriot! To h*ll with the status quo and the current oppressive establishment!

Nah, really I like the .30 cal bullet and the stone cold reliability and simplicity of it's design.

AR ,i trained with it in the marines, plus .223 ammo you can get any where, (7.62x39 mite get harder to find and more expensive in the near future) .

Give me a break. If I can use an ak for gophers, it is more than adequate. And, the ar isn't even close to being as reliable. I like almost anything with a trigger, but more important is that it needs to shoot all the time, not just when it is perfectly cleaned and maintained.

Hmm we were hitting man siloutes out to 300 meters in the sand box with AKs out of Afghani conexs(tractor trailer boxes filled, upper and lower racks both sides). Some were really bad, some were great for accurrecy. However They All Fired.

Oops didnt answer question......Niether prefer my M1A or HK91, Sorry.

If you you get a good AK like a converted Saiga, I'd have to say an AK. Why? Because an AK will keep working a lot longer if separated from its cleaning kit, and at 2 MOA is accurate enough. if I had to choose one gun, AK. Hands down.

AK, because in my state I may carry it concealed (with permit) one-point over the shoulder with a side-folding stock and 20 round magazine to reduce printing. Also it is lighter and handier; I can wear it slung two-point at the hip like an MP40 with 30 round magazine.
