I'm new to black rifles, and had a co-worker tell me about one his friend has for sale. All he could remember is it's an Oly Lower with an old style Colt Sp1 upper (he's not into guns). He said he was calling his friend to get more info tonight. I know it's not much info, but what's something like this worth. He also said it has an extendable stock, and lots of clips. Thanks.

Before you by a frankengun like that, it would be a good idea to verify that the lower is pre-ban.

This is a good ideal since it easy and cheap to get complete kits with "pre-ban" features. Unless you can be sure that this is an "pre-ban" AR-15 I would just get a Post-ban one.

Ryan, Olympic lost many records in a fire so it can be difficult to guarantee a rifle is preban. You can tell when the receiver was manufactured; but ATF does not regard a rifle as "pre-ban" unless it was assembled as a federally defined "assault weapon" prior to September 1994.

Unless he is willing to sign a notarized statement affirming that it was in such a configuration prior to 1994 or has some other proof (Form 4473 from dealer showing that), I'd pass on it as it may be more legal hassle than its worth in that configuration.

Alternatively, you can always write your Congressman or Senators to oppose renewal of the ban and it will be a moot point whether it is pre-ban or not on September 14, 2004.

No sense flirting with the feds unless you have a solid lineage for the weapon.

He will undoubtedly want more than it is worth. There are very few deals in authentic pre bans.

Take a look at a new bushmaster.

If you are in a patient mode, wait until the AWB sunsets this september.
