what caliber uppers are compatible with 5.56 lower?

7.62x39? 6.8? 6.5? i know i'll need new magazines, but will everything else just be plug and play?

30 carbine as I used to have a bolt for one. It was made for the Israeli's. Look in a copy of a Shotgun news and look for what the advertisers are offering.

DPMS makes one, but I've not shot theirs.

Mine is a 16" Colt (purchased as a complete carbine). The single biggest problem is with the magazines. I have two Colt OEM 10 round mags and two 20 round 'frankenmags' and none are 100%, although one of the Colt mags only chokes once in 50-70 rounds. Usually a FTF.

I kind of like the 7.62x39 round in the AR package, though it was a little weird at first, having an AR-15 with recoil. The 9mm is also a hoot, and just the opposite - almost completely lacking recoil.

Also, forgot to mention that the 9mm for sure, and likely other pistol calibers, require a few lower receiver parts replaced. There is a magwell adapter to mate the 9mm stick mags to the .223 magwell. Factory pistol calibers rifles may be sold with a properly configured magwell. The 9mm required a hammer, buffer, buffer spring and, if used in a rifle length stock, a buffer spacer.

AFAIK, the rifle calibers run on an unmodified AR-15 .223 lower.

I have a 7.62x39 upper from Model 1 Sales. You can see it here: http://www.pixagogo.com/4825444121 Click on a pic to make it bigger, then click on original at the top to blow that up. I used C Products 10 round clips and it has a MGI bolt in it. So far it's been flawless. Not tacticool, but it works. Funny thing is, the com bloc ammo did as good or better then the Winchester white box ammo.
