I've been looking at a Spikes tactical m4. I saw on the specs that the rifle comes with a 1:7 twist. I know that twist is for shooting heavier bullets. My question is will shooting 55gr through that barrell cause any problems or effect the longevity of the barrell?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: You may not get your best accuracy with that twist rate and bullet length (weight) combo. For plinking though, it shouldn't be a problem and you will not have any trouble shooting them out of that barrel. If you want maximum distance accuracy, than you will need to move up to the 69-77gr range, as you have noticed/stated. Make sure you don't have a more heavy than normal buffer spring in or you will run into issues of short stroking.

I've ran about 500 rnds of 55 grn through a spikes middy, accuracy is just fine.

No problems with short stroking.

I was seeing 2MOA groups with 55gr ammo in 1/7 barrels ARs. They ran 1.25 and 1.5MOA with 75gr ammo.
