I hear about the brass getting beat up. If there is no deflector does the brass still get dinged?

Another question to go along with that:Where dose the brass go without the deflector?

My Colt SP1 dings the mouths when they flip around and hit the receiver on the way out.

It throws them 8'-10' to the right rear.
Yes, they all miss your face when shooting it left-handed.

I sometimes shoot off the right-rear corner of my pick-up bed for a rest, and all the cases are in the bed when I get home.
Makes policing up the empty brass pretty fast & easy.

I have an AR with a brass deflector and one without. Neither one damages the brass.

The brass deflector really sings for its supper, every case hits it and flies forward and to the right.

The one without a deflector goes back and to the right.

Some loads seem more likely to ding than others. My two have no deflectors, but will definitely ding some loads. I too some heavy no slip tape, like you'd use on a truck or boat step and stuck it in the impact areas. Mare a big difference. Wish I had a catcher when Im using sorted or Lapua brass.

I wish that had been my experience in basic. The first one really got my attention when it bounced off my eye-protection. I was presented with a clip-in deflector after that.

The dings in the brass don't hurt anything. My A3 rifle "D's" up the mouth of the case. My piston carbine puts a good dent right in the middle of the case. All of the cases have reloaded and fired just fine afterward.

Which do you prefer?

I don't really care either way. If shooting at a range with a static firing line, the one without the deflector will allow me to pick up the brass while the line is still hot, since it throws it backwards. But if I only stay long enough to pick up my own brass, how else am I going to increase my supply? Buy more brass? No way!

I had to build a kydex brass deflector for my slick side-cocker upper, cause the brass trajectory isn't ideal for lefties that like to borrow the gun once an a while (including the g/f)

Previously brass would go 8' behind my right shoulder (about 5 oclock), with my deflector they go 90 degrees to my right and about 6', which is much better for lefties. I may try tweaking it to throw brass closer to my feet instead.

I wen't ahead & got the one with the deflector. I shoot right handed but one of my sons is left handed even tho he shoots bolt guns right handed.

I only put 2 rounds through it & they went to 4 O'clock without touching the deflector. Has nothing to do with the deflector or brass but it seemed to lack the recoil of the M16s. I know it will depend on load but I was shocked it had none & couldn't even fell the bolt close. My 22LRs have more recoil.

kingmt,

This depends on the use of your rifle, but a fellow Service Rifle shooter suggested to me to cut a ring or two from the ejector spring. All of my cases fall in a pile at about 2 to 3 o'clock. Very few cases get dinged.

Cheap and easy to try but may not give the performance you need.

I may give it a try on a replacement spring but save the OE just in case. Did he give you an idea to get it to box it up also. The pile would be helpful just saying ;)

Yes, get a replacement spring or two to experiment with. I think they are in the $5 range.

Unfortunately I have not figured out how to get the cases to box themselves up.:)

Have you tried any of the brass catchers on the market? If so what did you not like about them?
I detest picking up brass - but I hate more to walk away and leave $5-$8 laying on the ground.
I don't reload at this point - but some day when brass is not available - us hoarders will be able to reload with homemade lead bullets.

Deflector Pad

No more dents, using a brass deflector pad- adhesive backed weather stripping, cut to fit and apply to rifle. Or glue on some adhesive backed velcro Shooting left handed, no brass has ever hit me in the face shooting M16, Mini14 or Ar180. :) brassdeflectorpad.jpg

I was about to ask if anybody had ever tried glueing a pice of rubber or something to the deflector 243winxb. I like it. I may wind up doing that myself. Does it change where the brass lands? I'd love to not have to chase it as far.

I put a piece of mole skin on mine. It all seems to land about 4-5' straight to the right of me. I bet no one would like sitting at the bench to the right of me.

Freesprit

I haven't tried any but I have thrown a tarp on the ground.

for me, what rc said, as usual, mine get the double dent on the neck from the ejector pushing the brass as it clears the chamber, it pops out and dings off the front edges of the receiver lugs. nothing other than ejector tension will fix this, and I'm not having enough trouble with it to bother messing with the spring, but I did take the sharp points off the 2 lugs they were slapping into...

A buddy of mine showed up out in the desert where we shoot with a Dr. Scholl's corn pad stuck to his shell deflector. After I picked myself up from the ground where I had been rolling around from laughter he showed me how well it worked. :D

For 98 , this deflector drops the cases either at your feet,
or on the table next to the action... every single time. ;)
