O.K. Here’s my question: what is/ is not allowed for AR15’s in NJ?

I’m ready to SCREAM!

I’ve checked the state website and, not being a lawyer, it is not clear to me what is or, more importantaly, is not allowed under NJ’s insane laws. My curiosity not satisfied, I called the my local PD and asked them. They were more concerned with why I “needed” one, what I planned to do with it, and reminded me of the 15 round mag restriction, basically avoiding my real question.

The reason I need to know this is because I have only bought AR’s from FFL’s in the past, but I know someone selling a DPMS 16” carbine that is brand new and he will give me a good deal on it because I helped him move. I am concerned that the “Phantom” muzzle break/ flash hider will be illegal. In the eyes of the law what is the difference between a muzzle break and a flash hider? I know that the adjustable stock will have to go. Also, does any one know if certain receivers are verboten based on their markings?

Thanks for the help-

I would have your local ffl change out any parts that may offend, if possible.
I believe if it actually says 'AR-15' on the receiver, it is a banned ar-15.
if it were to say xm15, for example, it is not an ar-15... dumb, yes, but it is
what it is.

A muzzle break is similar to a compensator... Small holes that direct pressurized gases outward after the shot is fired, to counter muzzle rise, and the force of the projectile leaving the barrel. There are still flashes of fire coming through holes when a round is fired.

A flashhider usually has slots, on all four sides, that sumply supress and break up the "fireball" offering better visibility for followup shots. Does nothing for muzzle rise...

muzzel break question:

Some brakes/ hiders are legal if they fall under a specific defination. I can't find that def' anywhere. can anyone help with that?

Here's the basic requirements:

1. 16" or longer barrel
2. permanently mounted muzzle brake. No flash-hiders. Permanently mounted means 1100* silver solder or blind-pin and welded.
3. Fixed buttstock
4. Magazine capacity maximum of 15 rounds

As long as your rifle meets these requirements, you're good to go.

AR 15 In NJ

In the future skip asking the local PD, go straight to the NJ State police. They have a firearms division & they will answer any question reguarding this. They are the final word anyway. Most town PD's have no idea about the gun laws.

Just out of curiosity, where are you going to shoot it? My friend recently bought an AR and the nearest public range is in PA...

Aaaaggrgghghrghrghrgr.. *pained gurgling sound*

I know this isn't so helpful, but the word is brake. BRAKE. Bee-are-ay-kay-ee. Brake. It redirects blast and gas to slow down the rearward travel of the gun, like the BRAKES on a car, it exerts a BRAKING force to counteract recoil.

*wheeze*

Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

You can shoot AR at Ft. Dix. Some of the local paid clubs permit them as well. You just can't rapid fire at Ft. Dix as the RO is an old surly guy. Although, from what I've heard, it really depends on his mood that day.

Ah thanks... guess it depends on where you are in NJ... it's a shorter drive for me to the PA range than Fort Dix unfortunately.

man i hate to live where you guys live. i can just go out in the yard and shoot at anytime of the day or night thank god for the hills

I'm in NJ too...

Wher do you shoot? I have an AR15, and would like to shoot at longer ranges, but haven't found any outdoor ranges since I moved to NJ.
