I have a RRA NM. It came with an optional .030NM rear sight and 1/4 x 1/4 MOA/click.

I just did an Appleseed Shoot and I had a hell of a time seeing the simulated distant targets with my 48 yr old eyeballs.

Can the rear be changed and is it easy or a big deal. If easily changed, what would be a better bigger sight for old eyes? I have .595 on my M1A that doesn't seem as too small, but I haven't done any formal shoots with it.

Thanks,
Rikman

There are several options.

Go to a bigger aperture, .042 or so. A bigger aperturte will allow more light through for a brighter target, unfortunately this also gives a fuzzier target/front sight post. The smaller aperture is like stopping down a camera lens. It will sharpen the front post but darkens the target.

A wider front sight will help. I shoot a .070. The wide post gives the eye more area to focus on.

For the best results you should look into putting a hood and lens in the rear sight. Bob Jones makes the lens system I used to make Distinguished Rifleman. Check out these two sight sites for the poop straight from the source. Your NM sight has a screw in aperture that can be easly replaced with another aperture or hood and aperture.

Good luck on your shooting.

Howard,

Thanks for the great reply. I am leaning towards Arts rectangular sight. But, I'm not quite understanding the need for a lens in the rear sight and how it helps???

The lens focuses the front post. I shoot a +.25 diopter with a .046 aperture. When using a lens you will have to use a bigger aperture because of the light loss throught the lens.

Been looking at Decot also. What did you get? I need bifocals. Lens colors?

Bob was suggesting a regular lens in aiming eye and reading power in other.
His about $101. Why did you go with Decot?

I have the #67 with Target Orange Lite color lenses. I only wear them at the 300 yard line and back and when shooting smallbore prone. The color helps me to get better target definition, especially on cloudy days. At some point I'll get rose or vermillion to play with.

A properly selected lens will correct most vision probles other than astigmatism. You'll need glasses for that.

I got Decots because I've used them before and don't like to spend that kind of money on something I've never actually seen or touched.

Art and Bob post over on USRifleTeams.com and there is a lot of good information like this there as well. You have to register to access the page but that is no big deal

I use Rock River's .040 aperature on a 20" A2 along with their NM front post. I am 44 and have been struggling to see like I used to for the last several years. The .040 does darken things down from a larger GI aperature, but I am able to get a better, more accurate sight picture provided I don't try shooting in low light conditions.
