Are there civilian-legal (w/o reg) barrel launched smoke "grenades?" For the hell of it I've been looking at under-barrel 37mm flare and smoke launchers and wondered if there were legal, no registration smoke and flare barrel launched rifle "grenades?" Seems a hell of a lot cheaper than spending $300 for a neat looking otherwise useless AR toy. Ps- I have no interest in launching golf balls or soda cans lol

I'm sure there is something available for marine emergency use. Beyond that are fireworks legal in your state?

I've seen smoke, flare and firework 37mm "ammo".

I'm on my work computer and firewall blocks it, but I found it with a quick google search when I was looking to see if anyone had 37mm Launchers in stock.

I'm not aware of any rifle grenade available to the public that uses a bullet trap so you can launch it with ball ammunition. There are grenades like that in service with several foreign armies.

The problem with the other rifle grenades is they use a special ballistite cartridge to launch them and I don't know if they are available anywhere. I know some guys who were into reenacting that used fire practice rifle grenades from their M1s. I don't know where they got the cartridges to launch them.

I've got one of the 37mm launchers. 20 years ago I wanted to build an AR that resembled an M203. Bought a CM2037 launcher, hunted up an M203 hand guard and both the leaf and quadrants sights. It looks neat but it's only been fired a couple times as I found that the rounds that were available were very expensive with toy like effects.

You can launch smoke generators in 37mm but the output, to date, has been disappointing. I hear that some commercial class rounds are going to introduced at Shot this year. Who knows. ExoticAmmo.com distributes 37mm from the potential manufacturer so keep an eye there come January.

"Grenades" only exist in 37mm in the old school (19th century) fused variety and even then they are limited by ATF rules regarding the maximum charge. As I recall it is 1/4 oz TOTAL for lift and bursting charges.

^. This. The smoke and flare cartridges I've seen launched from 37mm were pretty "meh" inducing and neat-o factor ended after a tiny number of rounds. Sort of fun to see, I guess, but not enough to justify funds that could be used elsewhere.

There are lots of different rounds, some 37mm some 26.5mm that are decent. I think that the greatest "satisfaction" from using these things (as opposed to simply owning them, which has it's merits) comes when folks reload. Haven't done so myself but there are lots of recipes out there.

I think that it depends on expectations. If you expect the same sort of display as you get from a 6" mortar tube, disappointment is inevitable. The crappy smoke thing is something that I don't understand, personally. It's not like it is secret technology. Maybe it's a cost thing.
