Are we ready for mold companies to update?

From experience, is accuracy assured with higher end loads when gas checks are used vs just powder coating? I would guess that the gas check prevents the base from being pushed out of shape from the pressure.

Are gas checks necessary if using Xtreme hard cast bullets?
That's not a question which I think can be answered exactly or clearly. The best way I can break down my current beliefs is with pressure. 30kpsi ish and below loads with a full square base I don't use them or think they are nessary. Bullets that are designed for them can be used if lubricated or coated but I cannot say if or how much your giving up. Higher pressure loads than 35k is going to depend a lot on mix, soft enough for opteration or pushing hard enough to opterate. All this assumes you have a good fit or your going to get bad results and the other parts only determine how bad the snafu is.

Well, too me, the lube grooves are a PITA on coated bullets when using with a bullet feeder, so I would like to see an offering of classics like 38, 44, and 45 SWC's and RNFPs without lube grooves, and just a crimp groove.

Wouldn’t swaging be the answer for that? I know it’s a larger up front cost but the kits I’ve seen are really intriguing. I’m considering swaging and coating as a retirement home business. Much less dangerous than casting and the end product should be just as good. You really don’t need more than BHN10 under the Hi-Tek coating for anything under 2000fps.

I don't know a thing about it, but if you start doing it as a business, and hi-tek coating them, ping me offline.

If your doing anything manually from swaging to casting there is no way its worth your time for the money. I had only been casting for 6 months when I figured out how time intensive hand bullet making is. It's one of the reasons I gift bullets, it's a sign of respect and like a home made pie or cookies. Zero chance I would ever sell them.

Since many of us regard casting/swaging bullets as an extension of our main hobby, reloading, "wasting our time", "not worth time or money" just doesn't fit. Maybe is some were selling the bullets and needed profit margin figurers, but home casters? I don't count pennies for my cast bullets and I don't compare my handloads costs to factory ammo. (my last job, in 2010, paid me $42.85 per hr., plus perks. and there's no way I consider my play/hobby time equaling that figure).

No one ever asked me how much that 20 lb salmon that I just caught cost compared to the cost in a fish market...

Probably about the same as my last Elk cost...about 900.00 a lb.
We just started eating 21st century meat. ;)

I’m really not sure - and really don’t care - how much that 4 pounds of ham steak cost but if it was like any other year I’m guessing it was free or less than $1 for the whole package. That’s if I paid for the butcher and not the person I split the pig with.
Hunting doesn’t have to be expensive.

I think the real problem is a lack of mold builders that make 10 cavity molds from iron.

I like aluminum BUT they will not last a lifetime the way a Hensley Gibbs has.

It seems to me that companies that sell molds are about as out of date as the cast manual writers. Gas checked pistol bullets are about as outdated as belted magnums. Are we just stuck with molds that create the need for the added expense of a gas check forever or left buying cowboy style to shoot at full power. For pistol rounds super mags, 454, 460, and 500sw excluded the need for a gas check is gone!!!!

Have you looked at having your own design made up?
