Are wild hogs good to eat?

A friend of mine has wild hogs on his property. He says they're good to eat. I just needed other opinions before I decide whether or not to hunt them.

I've never shot or eaten them, but I'm told they're good eating. We were discussing them while I was deer hunting in Missouri recently.

Get 'em before they get to 200 lbs and there ain't much better. Every bit of one, even the ribs, can be grilled. Venison is too dry for that.

The meat is very good, particularly on a young hog, though wild hog meat is generally much leaner than you might expect from "store-bought" ham. I have been hunting and eating Tennessee Russian hogs for years. I usually take the hams to a local BBQ restaurant and let them cook 'em up professionally. Excellent.

And hunting the hogs is great fun, particularly if they are truly wild and you take them with a handgun at bad-breath distances!

Springmom and I each shot a hog last year, and got hams, ribs, chops, roasts, hocks, and LOTS of sausage off of them. the only thing you are not likely to get from a wild hog is bacon, simply because they don't carry enough fat.

They are BETTER eating than domestic pork: organic, lower in fat, and very tasty.

That said, it IS true that the really big ones, say over 225 - 250 pounds, are not so great. Hogs are omnivores, so by the time they grow that big they've eaten so much dead animal flesh that their own gets a mite unpleasant.

Great, challenging fun to hunt, too. Just be careful, 'cause unlike most deer, hogs will fight back.

Definitely good stuff, if you get them under about 150 pounds. Once you get above 175 or 200, they start to get tough. Along with 3 or 4 deer, I put at least one hog in the freezer every year. Keeps the fambly well fed all year.

Wild boar, feral pigs, pork of any kind......

HORRIBLE, BAD, NASTY, DO NOT EAT

Instead freeze and pack it carefully and send it to me for proper disposal.


In all honesty, the best "big game" I've had. Boar or feral pig, you can't go wrong.

I have run 'em with dogs, and I have taken some mighty close shots with a pistol, but I have yet to wrassel one with a knife. I am 53 years old, and I doubt that either my child bride or my life insurance company would be too happy to see me try one with a knife!

I have always avoided shooting the dog...dogs sure'nuff don't taste good, even with plenty of BBQ sauce.

The guy I did it with didn't want a handgun along, for the dogs safety. I convinced him it was just for self preservation. LOL However, I never had to use it. I was in my late 30s, early 40s when I was hunting with this guy. I'm 55 now, and don't know if I could hang with the dogs runnin' through rice fields and such. It's somewhat athletic.

WILD HOG IS! Some of the best meat i ever put in my mouth! the young ones are the best, i killed a big boar one time that was not fit to eat, i threw the head away and kept the meat, i should have kept the head and got ot mounted, but i thought i would get a bigger one, if i had a place to hog hunt i would shoot the 100# ones too eat, and the big ones for mounting and pictures! come on man! go! you will love it! csa

Great eatin. And you will see a bunch of them when you hunt. I singe mine with a torch before skinning and butchering. No bugs.

We had a tragedy down here couple three weeks back. A man and his grown son were catching hogs with dogs and the dogs got into it with a BIG hog and were getting tore up good. The son went in to help the dogs and the Dad tried to shoot the hog and ended up shooting his son in the neck and killed him. The Dad had to run near a mile to the road and then couldn't get anybody to stop and ended up running down the road to the next house to call 911 and by the time he got EMS back to his son the man was dead.

Wow, that's a sad tale. Stuff can happen with dogs. Most guys that have dogs also carry suture kits. And, they use 'em on the dogs a lot. It's a rough sport. A big hog can do some damage.

Feral hog os some of the best meat I've ever eaten. The younger then better

For the big ones, the farmer I used to work for live trapped them, castrated them and fed them corn for a few months. (Castrating a 300 pound wild boar is a story in itself! Just say that it can be done with enough people holding enough ropes tied to enough hog legs.) The best wild hunted hogs I've eaten were less than 75 pounds.
