Long time admirer, first time owner... Got mine in January '07. Its a Bushmaster in the so-called M4A3 setup: 16" barrel, flattop receiver/removable handle, adjustable stock, etc.

Bought my first AR last Thursday. It's Bushmaster XM-15 flat top A3 20" barrel. Two reasons, Dem. controlled Congress and I, for once, have the money to do so or I would have done it sooner.

- Fixed 10-round magazine
- Loaded by pushing the takedown pin and pivoting the rifle open

Great googly moogly... Stuff like this is good to remind me that NC ain't THAT bad....yet. Thanks for telling how you go about loading a fixed AR mag, I was wondering.

You know, it's ironic in a way. If not for McCarthy whipping out AWBII in a Democrat-controlled congress, and if Jim Zumbo had not called the AR a "terrorist rifle," I STILL might be happy with just my SKS.

Maybe with me it's one part "get it before it goes away" and one part "tick off the narrow-minded nitwits that think you're eeeevil for owning an eeeeevil black rifle!

Neither . . . bought mine 'cuz I like 'em . . . wonderful platform. Have a heavy-barrel, highly accurate model for varmints & a carbine for fun (or for "different" varmints).

Got my first AR a few weeks ago... definitely felt some political motivation, and had a bit of money from the sale of a couple pistols so I went for it. Got a kit from Del-Ton ($465) and a Double Star stripped lower receiver ($110 also from Del-Ton, sent through my local gun shop). Took about and hour to put all those little parts into the receiver, but the thing works great.

I took it to an Appleseed shoot yesterday and made "Rifleman" on their AQT with it! I was completely happy with it!

It's a 16" flattop heavy barrel, standard military trigger, and collapsible stock.

Was thinking about a Kel-Tec SU16, but decided to spring for the AR since there is the possibilty that I wouldn't be able to get one in the future.

I don't regret the purchase a bit!:)

I just like ARs. I had shot plenty of other folk's ARs before I owned one, waited till the ban died to build one of my own. I have two, well, 1.5, another lower on order, and plan on getting a few more lowers as well. In a way I'm politicly motiviated, the latest elections put a boot in my tail to get some more of what I wanted.

I put a 16" RRA together on 9/17/04. Two-pin build. Had to sell it due to a car payment I agreed to while half asleep.

After paying off Mom's POS Bronco II with the money I got from my AR*, I started putting a 9mm together so I could shoot it at the range I frequent, and I planned on putting a 5.56 together shortly after. I'm finally getting around to it.

I'm waiting on my upper from CMMG, its dissy style midlength. I plan on turning my 9mm into a dissy as well.

I dont have any pics of my old one, but here's a shot of my current 9mm and half of my 5.56. The 9mm has an EOTech 552 and a surefire G3 mounted to the FSB by a cheap mount from CDNN, and cheap rings from wal-mart. Both will be moved to my 5.56. Both have M4 stocks, magpul enhanced triggergaurds, and the fingergroove sanded off the A2 grip.

Future AR plans include a 20" A3 and a 16" lightweight for the lady.

*Yeah, there's a little bit of hostility there. Long story.

I hate asking stupid questions, because, well, it makes me look stupid and ruins the fact that I hide that pretty well, but:

Mudcamper, what does "off list" mean?

I'm relatively new. I technically bought mine "last year" but I've owned it for fewer than 365 days. If that makes sense.

I just got around to dismantling the whole thing down to the last pin and spring and doing a little sear/hammer polishing. Figured I might as well while I had it apart.

I'm learning, at any rate. I shoot it alright but not that great because .223 is so danged expensive these days compared to just being a lazy/cheap bum and taking my 10/22 out instead.

I bought mine because I had a distinct lack of Evil Black Rifle in my diet, and I wanted to get something reasonably high cap in a real rifle caliber with parts and mags and whatnot readily available, plus the upper conversion idea appeals to me. I also bought mine because I got a danged good deal on it: 600 out the door for a 20" heavy barrel pre-ban variant, Rock River Arms lower and a Sendra upper packaged with ten magazines and a soft case - and it great shape. Can't beat that with a stick.

While enlisted in the army I swore I would never ever own an AR as carrying around and constantly cleaning an M16 gets old.

However, I've been out for over 2 years now and it turns out I miss the darn thing. Like someone else said, I have fired more rounds through an M16 than any other rifle i own and am more comfortable with it than anything else.

That and the Dems taking over definately influenced my decision. "Buy them cheap, stack them deep" Ok, so it wasn't cheap, but at least you can still buy them now, only a matter of time till that changes.

Mudcamper, what does "off list" mean?

In California, we have an "assault weapon" ban. What that means (at this point, after portions of the law have been defeated in court) is that there is a huge list of banned guns by make and model. There's also a banned feature list, like the now expired federal ban (only worse). So to build a CA-legal rifle it must start with a receiver that is not on the banned list. Then it must either not have a detachable magazine, or not have any "evil" features.

Notice that the 2 rifles that I built were made out of Bushmaster and Colt parts, except for the lower receivers, which had to be some no-name that is not on the banned list.

but at least you can still buy them now, only a matter of time till that changes

I don't know that that is true. I doubt the new federal ban will pass. And even here in CA, with a ban dating back to '89, the state can't keep em out after all this time - legally. If anything, "assault weapon" bans just cause more semi-automatic files like the AR and AK to sell like hotcakes.

So what brands does everyone recommend? With the HR1022 bill, perhaps I can convince my wife to let me spend upto $1000 on a fine piece of history...

I would like it to have
1. Scope mounting capability
2. Fixed sights already on it
3. A 'regular' non-collapsable stock with pistol grip

That's about all of my specs for the gun. So what do you experienced AR guys suggest? Brand and model please.

Although it wasn't this year, I bought my first in September/October. RRA CAR 15. Love it.

Its been flawless through several thousand rds.

Now I just don't know what I want to do to my second one I'm gonna buy.

Not This Year...This WEEK!!

Bought my first AR part last week; complete Stag Lower. Bought complete Rock River "Varmint" upper (18" SS Bull Barrel, Flat top) today. Ace Skeleton fixed stock is ordered & on it's way. A few more pieces (mags, buffer tube & spring, fold-down sights, optics & mount) and I'm complete & good-to-go.

Been thinking about an AR for a while. FFL Buddy of mine says EVERYTHING is drying-up in a big, BIG hurry. He can't order rifles or complete lowers fast enough & he buys 10 at a time with cash. I already have my Battle Rifle (FN-FAL) but a 5.56 variant seemed...uh, prudent.

Just like Immus' comments & Anna Nichol's baby & the Duke University LaCrosse Team...Gun Restriction is moving WAAAYYY up on the list of Public Opinion "HOT TOPICS" that masquerade as activities requiring the attention of the U.S. Congress. The fact that the Constitution assures our right to own an AR15 is insignificant. The Constitution also assures our right to secure our borders against invasion. Maybe Congress might have a look at THAT issue?!?

If you've ever wanted an AR (for ANY reason) GO BUY one! RIGHT NOW! Log off this forum, drive to the local Gunshop, and BUY ONE! I'm not some panic-driven alarmist. I'm an AR15 Paul Revere. The Grabbers are Coming...the Grabbers are Coming...

ordered mine at theend of March and hope to have delivery by end of April. have heard all the long time waits but that is why i have put this on my prayer list.

I've had two lower receivers since December 2005 when the initial off-list lower craze hit California. I was patiently waiting to see if California was going to ban them, and when they did not I decided to build them up in a California legal configuration. I just finished my first one last month mostly because I am getting married in the summer and realize that I am not going to have nearly as much disposable income, and that then I will have to tell my wife how much they actually cost.

I bought my first one, a Colt, in early 1996.

Since then, I've had 3 or 4 more AR's, and an M-16. (Well, the M-16 actually belongs to the business, because it's a post-86 dealer sample.)

Bought my first last Friday, an Olympic Arms CAR-15. A little upset, b/c it doesn't have the M-4 A3 removable carry handle, but I'll live. Haven't got to shoot it yet though.

BTW, where can I get some good schematics of how to take it down and oil it? Think ar-15.com has somethign?

Probably. arfcom has so much stuff I hate looking for anything there. I lurk in the industry and AR15 forums, and that's about it.

If it helps, I think I downloaded the bushmaster manual (.pdf) from the bushmaster website.
