Is your dove field planted??? If not, you better hurry because you’re about out of time!

About mid April, I planted sunflowers and grain sorghum. After getting the garden completed, I followed up planting a few spots in the garden with mixtures of sunflowers, sorghum and millet. The last of the bird field was planted this weekend with millet and a couple more rows of flowers. I doubt the flowers planted this weekend will mature in time for the first season, but what the heck. Right now is primetime for millet to mature just before season.

I’m trying something a little different with the sunflowers this year. I typically just broadcast seed flowers. I’ve had pretty good results doing this, but I know I’ll get larger flowers if rowed. I sowed some rows of flowers in my bird field and also a few rows in the garden. Most of them are up about 12” high. I cultivated and side dressed them with (3) 13. No big difference in flower size compared to the broadcast flowers, but that may change as they get larger and Summer gets hotter and dryer.

I’ve planted the sorghum the same way. Typically it’s just broadcast, but I also planted some rows this year. The only problem with the sorghum is the tiny seed. I don’t have a drill, so all rows are planted with a Covington planter. Even my smallest plate drops several seeds in each spot. I may see if I can find a better suited plate for next years planting.

I think the doves will enjoy the clean cultivated rows better than the thick broadcast patches; we’ll see.

If you’re not planted yet, there’s still time for millet, so no excuses (other than possible drought :() come September!

Update: Grain sorghum takes serious offence to nitrogen! I side dressed my corn with some 35-0-0 the other week. Had a little left over so I thought: sorghum looks like corn, maybe I should give it a little nitrogen. As it turns out, sorghum burns Easy! I have a couple rows that are looking a little rough. We’re getting a little rain, so I’ll hold tight to see what happens. Worst case, I’ll just plow it and plant a little more millet.
