At IDPA, watched a young man argue with the safety officer about a procedural, while the SO was attempting to prepare for his next run. Later, after the day was done... we were all hanging out and he brings it up again and insists that the score be changed.

His family was present, so maybe this was some macho thing... but, boy, was I laughing inside.

For me, I compete against myself - not the person scoring. I guess some people take the numbers pretty seriously.

I also think that is funny. My view is that if there is any doubt about how to score the round, score it down to the next category. If a round hits the line... it gets scored as the lower value.

Fly320s, in IDPA if you have to look real hard at a bullet hole it gets the higher score. Been on both sides of that many times. If I think its out I won't let the SO "give" it to me. I want what I've earned.

Sven, I have been the recipient of two wrongly given procedurals at the IDPA Nationals one year. I still went on to receive First Place in my class/division. I attempted to resolve the issue with the SO; but, he didn't want to look stupid so he just blew me off. The next day I took it up with the match director and he wasn't inclined to help either. I just knew I had been knocked out of the running for anything. We stopped by the range on the way back from eating in Memphis to find out the news. Doom on them. I was there to shoot. If I won anything, fine. It was sweet.
On the other hand we had a shooter at the OK State Championship last weekend who received a procedural and he got it the old fashioned way, he earned it. That didn't stop him from asserting his RIGHT to challange the call. It stuck. Later he was still talking about it. I talked to him about various things and found out that he was just a little high strung and nervous about the match. I am sure he will be a better competitor in the matches to come.
As long as people are SAFE and don't get NASTY I don't mind them questioning anything. After all, they have put down good money to be there and are spending quite a bit more in lodging, food, and transportation. And some are burning annual leave to be there, as I was last weekend.

Range lawyers....

So the shooter is right, and the SO is wrong, that doesn't matter????

You are going to label the shooter a "Range lawyer" because he want the rules to be followed fairly?

The above quote is the same train of thought that the Liberals have on your rights and the Constitution.

The most important rule, if there is any question about the scoring.. the benefit of doubt is given to the shooter.

Heck, it's not worth the hassle as far as I'm concerned.

This was not a scoring problem, it was most likely someones lack of knowledge of the rules of the game, although good practice, still a game with rules.

Local matches the benefit definately should go to the shooter. At a big match they will usually pull the target for the Rangemaster to make the call(USPSA at least)

I've always had the 2-2 rule. If it isn't clear after 2 seconds from 2 yards away from the target, it goes to the shooter.

Otherwise, I've always been told if someone argues a procedural while I'm scoring, simply refer it to the Match Director.
