...that anybody's ever mass imported those. The supply may be limited to war bringbacks. Keep your eyes peeled @ gunshows would be my recommendation.

A guy I work with has a lot of Arisakas. I mean a lot = hundreds including unground, ones with anti-aircraft sights, you name it. I am sure he would be willing to part with some of them, but the price is between you and him; I have no idea on price.

444, if he's interested in selling some, would you ask him to consider posting an offer on our Buy, Sell And Trade forum? If he can offer good-condition Arisaka's at a reasonable price, I daresay he could sell several dozen on this forum, without any expenses for advertising, distribution, etc. Heck, the purchaser would even pay for shipping! Please let me know if he wants further information - I'm willing to call him, on my dime, to answer any questions he may have.
Ok, let me contact him; this will take a couple days assuming I remember. This guy is a collector. And isn't buying and selling guns to make money. He isn't the type of guy that feels he has to sell a gun if he doesn't shoot it and he doesn't feel that he has to justify owning it for some reason, but he has sold me a number of guns over the years. He has always produced an invoice and charged me whatever he has in the gun. Keep in mind that I know him and he might not do the same for someone else. I just don't know. I also don't know how much of an effort he will make to sell them. He is perfectly content to let them sit right where they are, but I am sure if someone told me what they were looking for, I could ask him if he had one, and if he wanted to sell and I could then put the two of you in contact. He buys these Arisaka rifles at auctions and might get a couple dozen at once. He has a very nice milsurp collection, but he is primarily interested in Arisakas.
Please realize that I am making all kinds of disclaimers because I made this remark off the cuff and never consulted him about it. I had no idea that more than one guy would be interested and all that. I will tell him that a number of people are interested in buying Arisaka rifles and if he is interested I will let him know where he can post his wares.

If you just want one for shooting, pick up a "sporterized" one with no mum. These will go for under $100 in 7.7 and perhaps a little more in 6.5 The Arisakas with Mum, original sights and stock are collectors items and go for a lot more. Either way, they are extremely tough and quite light weight compared with other rifles of the age.
The only Arisakas to avoid are the "last ditch" Type 99 rifles. Most of the ones I've seen were pretty obviously sub-standard, but since the Japanese SN system started over again at 99,999, it's impossible to tell how late in the war your Type 99 was made.
The biggest drawback is the off-beat ammo. 7.7 brass is hard to find. You can use converted .30'06 brass, but only if you don't load it too hot. The dimensions are not identical. Norma's 7.7 brass is the best bet. 6.5 brass may even be harder to get ahold of, but I've never had to look for it so I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure Norma makes it. Thank the lord for those Swedes and their stubborn adherence to archaic ammunition!

Once again I want to impress upon everyone that I have not spoken to this guy about this at all, ever. This began with one guy asking about one rifle and I was pretty sure he could be fixed up. But my friend isn't a store. He isn't in the gun business. I can't speak for him, but I wouldn't want this to get out of hand. Please let's not have 50 people come on here and say they want one. As I said, I will tell him that there is an interest. If he is willing to part with some of his collection, and if he is willing to go through the hassle of negotiations, packing, shipping, etc. you might be in luck. I personally would not do that; one maybe two rifles is one thing but.......................

Assuming he wants to part with a few rifles, don't waste his time trying to buy something for $25, and don't waste his time talking about how you can get it cheaper somewhere else. He knows what he has in this stuff, he knows what the current market is. When I have bought stuff from him, he wanted to get out of it, what he put into it. If he paid $200 and you can buy one now for $25; he still wanted $200 since that is what he had in it. Again, he is not a store. He doesn't lose money to make you happy and is not interested in negotiation.

Ok, went back to work today and gave my buddy a call. He says that he has some Arisakas that he would be willing to part with. He says he will go home and see what he has got. He did tell me that he doesn't want to post anything for sale on the internet. This is as I suspected, like I said, he is not in the gun business and has no desire to be. But he is going to let me know what he has available.
