I took and completed an NRA course for a carry permit in Connecticut and now have a Connecticut CCP. However, I wanted to get an Arizona out of state carry permit because I heard that I would not need to take another NRA course-as I would if I wanted to get a Florida or Utah out of state permit. I was wondering if this is correct or not.

P.S. I am watching the fights as I type this so my apologies if my grammar is less than stellar.

Well you wont need it for Arizona that's for sure. Arizona is a free carry state.

Thanx, Russ

AZ permit is the same for resident or non resident, and yes, it is still available. Unfortunately, I believe you will still have to take the class here in AZ. Cal AZ Department of Public Safety Handgun Permit division for more info - They're bored now, would welcome the diversion.

Here are the training requirements for the AZ permit:

N. An applicant shall demonstrate competence with a firearm through any of the following:

1. Completion of any firearms training program that is approved by the department of public safety and that is conducted by instructors who are authorized by the department of public safety or who possess current national rifle association instructor certifications in pistol and personal protection and who submit to a background investigation, including a check for warrants and a criminal history records check.

2. Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class that is available to the general public, that is offered by a law enforcement agency, a junior college, a college or a private or public institution, academy, organization or firearms training school and that is approved by the department of public safety.

3. Completion of any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Arizona game and fish department or a similar agency of another state.

4. Completion of any national rifle association firearms safety or training course.

5. Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class that is offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies or other divisions or subdivisions of law enforcement or security enforcement and that is approved by the department of public safety.

6. Evidence of current military service or proof of honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions from the United States armed forces.

7. A valid current or expired concealed weapon, firearm or handgun permit or license that is issued by another state or a political subdivision of another state and that has a training or testing requirement for initial issuance.

8. Completion of any governmental police agency firearms training course and qualification to carry a firearm in the course of normal police duties.

9. Completion of any other firearms training that the department of public safety deems acceptable.

I am an NRA and Arizona state certified instructor. As Navy LT posted you qualify under at least two parameters.

You will need to fill out the application. Submit two Arizona Department of Public Safety Concealed Weapons Permit Unit fingerprint cards. Include a copy of your current permit and/or your certificate for completion of your class. And, a cashier's check or money order (no personal checks) for $60.

You can get all the info and contact info for AZ DPS at: http://www.azdps.gov/Services/Concealed_Weapons/

If you call the unit at (602) 256-6280 they will mail you a packet that includes the application, the two fingerprint cards and a return envelope.

Unfortunately, I believe you will still have to take the class here in AZ.

Heck, I see that as a plus! I have an Arizona CWP, and I wish they had renewal classes so I could have an excuse to get out there more often. I am very pleased that they have become a permitless carry state, but I am still planning on holding onto mine.

There's an advantage to having a recognized permit in Arizona.

In general, places that serve alcohol by the drink are off limits if armed. But with a recognized permit one may carry concealed in a restaurant that serves alcohol, or a bar, unless the establishment is properly posted, but he just can't consume alcohol.

I have a recognized permit. On my last trip to Arizona I found it very convenient to be able to stop at a restaurant for a meal without having to stash my gun in my car.

I have had two different gentlemen tell me they obtained an AZ CCW through the mail without making a trip to AZ. They used their DD214 as per AZ Law:
6. Evidence of current military service or proof of honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions from the United States armed forces.

They said they called them and they sent them the materials needed. Filled it out and sent it in and got their permit in the mail

I can't find on the AZ DPS page where it says you have to have the training inside the Boarders of AZ now.

Sorry, I didn't look up all the changes, thanks, LT. Yep, those were in the package of big improvements passed beginning of this year, so I do believe you are in the clear, follow the instructions above, and have a good time! The new permits look quite, nice, BTW, my wife still has hers for the very same reason stated - Olive Garden has good food and no sign. It USED to be you had to take the class in AZ, but that was quite a while ago. I hadn't kept up so well on that law since I haven't required a permit for several years due to my job.
