An elk taken last October on the Buffalo River tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has randomly tested deer and elk for several years and this is the first one to test positive. Elk were brought into the state in the early 80's and now have a population large enough to allow a few permits each year.

Since the incubation period for CWD is thought to be a minimum of 16 months, CWD is something that generally only manifests itself in mature adult animals, even tho animals may have contracted the disease from their mother at birth. When CWD was first discovered here in Wisconsin, deer hunters panicked thinking our deer herd would be decimated. It ain't happened altho the state has done things to help prevent the spread. Basically reducing the deer herd and making baiting and feeding illegal. Both are intended to keep animal to animal contact to a minimum. Since the average age for bucks shot in Wisconsin are approximately 18 months old, while they may be infected, they generally don't show symptoms.
