Good evening, I was looking at purchasing an Armalite AR-10A. I am used to almost universal compatibility with ar-15 builds, so it is a little confusing as to which barrels will fit this model. It is the defensive sporting rifle model with the 16", I handload and my other 308's have 18" so I would prefer a target or match grade 18".

However the only barrels I have found in quantity online are DPMS pattern which I was told will not work. Armalite is of course sold out. I have read good reviews on the accuracy of the stock barrel but sub 2400fps with a 175gr pill doesn't sound as nice as a 18 or 20" barrel. I can pick it up fairly cheap, but if there aren't many barrel options I can upgrade to I will probably pass on it.

I believe if you get a DPMS style bolt and put it in the armalite carrier it will work. You would also need a DPMS pattern gas tube and a new forend. Honestly unless your getting a super deal on it I would just buy what you want to begin with or build one from scratch.

Thanks, I found a Armalite Tac 18, still shopping around to see if anything beats it but will probably go with that or an Aero m5e1

I couldn't find decent barrels that were in stock, so I went with an Aero M5E1 and ordered a faxon 18" 5r fluted. After I ordered I read good reviews on the company, but conflicting reports on the accuracy of it, so hopefully it will work ok. Thanks

Armalite and DPMS barrel extensions are identical. Armalite and DPMS barrel nuts / receiver threads are not.

This means that you can exchange barrels between them, but you cannot exchange forearms.

I believe the bolts are different depth so you will have headspace problems unless you also use the correct bolt.
