Got my new Scar 16S in yesterday - As some know - I sold my Steyr AUG and used the $$ to pay for this.

Today, I put 287 Rounds thru the gun. Fantastic gun! Had a great time.

Now, I had already read it was it was super loud with the factory muzzle break - But, the break also reduces recoil a little. I wanted to try it before I just went ahead and took it off and had a flash hider installed...

Well.. DAMN was it loud sitting under a metal roof (outside) when it went off. I had to go back to the car and add foam ear plugs UNDER my muffs. And, with the reflection of the noise off that roof, I still started to get a headache.

But, I love this gun. I was using my Mepro 21 reflex sight (with triangle reticle) - an optic I had left over after I sold my Steyr AUG a couple of weeks back. After sighting it in, I was very impressed with the optic. I actually had considered selling it and getting a Trijicon 1-4x scope, as I didn't shoot as well with it on the AUG. But, for some reason, I shot with the Mepro MUCH better with the same optic on the SCAR.

So, I've decided not to bother with the Trijicon scope. I might shoot a little better groups with the magnification - but not $1000 better groups - hahahaha. Plus, with a mount, such a scope would add more weight to the rifle...

Anyway, After 150 rounds, I left the range for a little while, and I had the factory muzzle break removed. It was replaced with a Yankee Hill flash hider instead (it was $35). I then went back to the range and shot another 100+ rounds with it. HUGE difference. Recoil is a tiny bit more - but the noise seemed to be cut in 1/2. Just the muffs were fine at that point.

As I had read online previously - the zero of the rifle changes a bit when you make such a change. It was 3.5 inches to the left at 50 yards. So, I re-zeroed my optic with the new flash hider.

I did most of my shooting at 50 yards, but actually did about 80 rounds at 100 yards. First time I ever did that - as my eyes suck without magnification - and I never shot the AUG that well at 100 yards with my reflex sight. I did very well.

I also really like the TROY battle grip I installed last night (factory gun coems with an A2 grip - I hate that finger groove). The new pistol grip is at a slightly different angle, but it actually rests on sandbags better than a Magpul grip does.

Congratulations! It would be interesting if you could give us your impressions with the AR-15 as a point of reference. For example, how are the ergonomics of the SCAR vs. those of the AR?

I'd rate the SCAR as superior to the AR in ergonomics and design.

The SCAR is completely ambidextrous with very well thought out placement of controls. Highly stressed parts that are prone to failure on the AR have been redesigned or eliminated.

Yes, I'd go along with what was just said. I also really like the way the charging handle works on the SCAR. Only negative is that the SCAR is a bit heavier than a DI AR.

But, I have a thing for piston based 5.56 rifles. The SCAR does seem to have a bit more recoil than the Steyr AUG I had. But, I think i shoot the SCAR better. I noticed that the AUG I had needed the barrel to heat up a bit to shoot better groups.

Congrats!

I have a Scar 17 that I always bring to the range with me even if I don't intend on shooting it. It is very useful for the jerk who thinks it is funny to rain brass on me. I just uncase my scar and start the sonic "BOOM!!!". Think a .223 is loud? Try a .3088! It usually only takes a couple of rounds before someone gets the idea and decides to move a couple lanes away.

Yea, I've heard a 308 before. However, I can only imagine how much louder it would be with a muzzle break. Man.

After I had been at the range for 1.5 hours, a guy next to me came to sight in three ARs. One of his guns had that exact flash hider on it. And, I had already looked at the ones locally, priced them, and had decided on the Yankee Hill one - especially since the local shop offered to change out the factory muzzle break for the flash hider.

So, I could hear how loud his gun was compared to mind. That made up my mind.

I considered selling the factory muzzle break - but the guy at the store suggested that I keep the factory one, in case I ever sell the SCAR. As I tend to buy things and sell them later when I see the next thing I want - that's probably good advice.

Point of impact moved about 3.5 inches... Towards the 8:30-9 o'clock position. I was surprised to see it move that much.

Guy at the gunstore/gun smith did not think it would move much. But, I had previously read an old thread on a forum a week or two ago (while reading up on the SCAR). He claimed that its POI moved when he changed to a flash hider - but was not specific about how much it would move...
