Greetings all,

After a few years in the army, I'm going back to college. One of the colleges I've been accepted to happens to be in New York State, specifically in Monroe County, even more specifically in the city of Rochester. (NOT New York City!)

I've briefly scanned over some material, and it appears that New York State has in place an "assault weapons ban" very similar to the now-expired Federal ban. Coming from California, this isn't a terribly big change.

However, I've heard mention in a few various online communities (can't remember where, unfortunately) that at least some AR/AK series rifles are available for purchase in stores outside of New York City.

Does anyone have any verifiable information on this? Are such rifles prohibited, or no?

My other choice (and I have yet to hear back from them) is in Arizona. Of course in AZ, there are no silly restrictions of that sort, and I could easily buy a machinegun once I get my residency status sorted out.

Some AR types are available for purchase in NY state. NYC is a different story.

I doubt Arizona, after it becomes part of Aztlan, will allow ownership of military style firearms by the people.

Secondly, Loyalists to the USA will be expelled from Aztlan similar to what we did after the Revolutionary War to Loyalists of King George III.

I live there

(Rochester area)What school are you going to U of R? RIT?

Anyway, yes we have what is an exact copy of the federal AWB in place only ours never sunset. But, there's lots of pre-ban stuff available, as well as the newer stuff(SARs, ARs and such). Not as nice as living in a "free state" but you can have some reasonably "cool stuff". NYC is another world, you can't have anything there..most of us that live upstate wish NYC would either drop off into the Atlantic or become its own state.

The local collector association puts on a gun show every 3 months, and its pretty good (going tomorrow). Much better than most I hear about here and on other boards. Everything sold MUST be gun related. I buy much of my ammo here. There are also several good gunshops in the area, and Doug Turnbull Restorations is right down the road. Also a couple good gun clubs in the area.

CCW, however is tough....they're really trying to discourage it, by making the process very difficult. And, since you will have only lived here for a short period, forget it...They want references from people that have known you several years, that are local residents. Extra points if they are CCW holders/LEOs.

In short, while not the best place to be a shooter, there's still plenty of shooting fun to be had, and its not quite as bad as some people would have you believe.

I know you asked about "assault weapons", but since the topic of CCW came up, my understanding is that the difficulty of obtaining an unrestricted license to carry varies greatly from county to county. You might want to take that into account when deciding where to live.

Hmm, I better find out about that. I'm not planning on moving but I might be living in Aztlan pretty soon. I hope so actually!

Could you be more specific? What types (preferably new-production rather than older stuff) are available for purchase?

Regular ARs by reputable manufacturers without the :barf: fixed magazine requirement that California has? Are common AKs (WASR-10s, among others) available?

What school are you going to U of R? RIT?

RIT.
