astigmatism options?

so what id like to find then is a non-red dot optic that can be used in a similar manner

I find that etched reticle (standard scopes) and projected reticle (Trijicon reflex and Meprolight M21) have the least amount of distortion from astigmatism.

Scope type optics at 1x and 1.5x can be very fast up close and usually have a good feel of view.

The reflex optics are very fast up close and get the reticle and target in the same focal plane. Better optics will have less color filtering effect.

First things first. Get an up to date prescription and glasses. You need that anyway. Eyes are really important. I was blessed with superior vision when I was young. Now that I am older, I have to wear glasses. Even so, I can no longer use iron sights very well at all. As time goes on I need better optics as well. Shooting with glasses is a new skill to learn for me.
Good luck Justin.

yeah, thats kind of the plan, its probably best i updated my optics anyway and frankly a 1-4x illuminated optic just makes sense.. even compared to a red dot you have most the same advantages close range, the option of long range without a magnifier, you can adjust the focus and the etched reticles means you dont really need backup iron sights

it just seems like a better way to go anyway even if it wasnt better with an astigmatism

I have an astigmatism in my right, or dominant eye, or so they say. Up until about 10 years ago, I wore progressive trifocals, which every other year or so, they would increase the power of.

One summer back then at work, I broke my glasses, and could not get to the eye doctors to replace them, so I started to just wear my safety glasses. I havent worn corrective lenses since, and believe it or dont, my eyes have actually gotten better, not worse. At this point, I use Walmart 1.5x "3 pairs for $7" cheaters for reading very fine print on blueprints, script bottles, etc. Other than that, I dont need them, and havent missed them in the least.

My theory is, every time you go in, they increase the power, and it just makes your eyes progressively weaker, lazy. Ive had three eye exams since, and every time, asked the doc about my theory, and they all just blew me off and didnt seem to want to hear it. This past summer, I took my 10 year old glasses along to a different doctor, and didnt say anything until after the check up, and then gave him the glasses. He did admit, while still not perfect, my eyes were better than those glasses would have suggested. He still didnt want to hear it though. I do still have an astigmatism apparently.

Im not saying some people dont need them, far from it, just that I do think its a big racket, and sort of a sure thing for the eye glass places.

All that said, Ive used red dots now for about 15 years, with and without the glasses, and I see no difference. The dots have never been "round", but they are not some big starburst thing either. The dot looks the same to both eyes too, and my left eye doesnt have it, so I dont know whats up with that. I dont have, nor have I ever had, any issues with scopes either.

Like already said get your eyes checked!!!

You may have to buy 2 pairs of glasses. I'm near sighted and with my old eyes have a problem getting a sharp front post. I also shoot a red dot on my BE 22 pistols.

I had the eye doc give me a script taking 1/4 a diopter out of my script. This allowed me to focus on the front post on the irons and get a good clear dot. The target can be a little fuzzy whereas the dot or front post cannot be. My .02 cents.

I have a bad astigmatism. I use contacts. I was prescribed a new type omafilcon A or something and they are the best yet for me. Another option is to use your best eye if one is significantly better

my eyes are less than half a dioper in both cylinder and sphere, so one eye isnt going to be noticeably better than the other, contacts are a waste of money since i'll just get eye surgery in the next year or two, i think the solution has already been found, either an illuminated 1-4x, or a fixed 1x prismatic scope (much shorter and lighter than the 1-4x)

For handgun shooting using iron sights, are prescription shooting glasses just eyeglasses that are optimally focused where the front sight of a gun would be?

When getting your eyes checked, make sure the eye doctor looks closely for cataracts. I went from 20/50 "Best Corrected" in my left eye to 20/25 after having cataract surgery and getting a special lens to correct for the astigmatism.

As a general rule, you should get your eyes checked yearly after you reach "a certain age."
