I went to Academy this weekend. It was "tax free weekend" in Texas, so all the areas of the store associated with "back to school" - clothing, shoes and backpacks were a zoo. The firearms area was essentially deserted.

Until now, this particular Academy has stocked primers, bullets, and a smathering of reloading equipment (i.e. shell holders, reloading manuals, etc.), but no powder nor brass. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had added a shelf with a small quantity of powder - all from Hodgdon - but powder nevertheless; although they had no small pistol primers.

Academy has carried powder for close to a year now.

Some may have, but the one near my house - as late as last May - did not have any powder on the shelves, under glass or behind the counter. In fact, I asked the manager why they stocked primers and bullets but not powder or brass and he just chalked it up to the higher-ups in the company determining that there wasn't enough demand for it.

I'm glad I live south of Dallas and not north. It seems like they are lacking brains up there. They just opened up a new Academy store in Rockwall, much to my wife's chagrin. It's a much better store than the Mesquite store and lots closer than Garland.

Typically, stores of this nature don't carry every single item. The local manager chooses what he thinks will sell in his store. So if your local store has a gun department but no powder, then I urge you to talk to the gun dept manager. Stress that you buy a lot of powder, that you are local to that particular store, that you are passing his store to drive across the city to another store simply because of the absence of powder. I bet you'll have powder next time you visit.

Even the local Walmart had a couple of 1400 round Golden Bullet buckets sitting on the shelf (~$74). I only got one. Things are settling down nicely, once it starts staying on the shelf, prices will start to retreat.

I still think bulk pack .22lr has the chance to settle at about $0.04 per round based on the about $0.15 per round 9mm I'm seeing and the "historical" ratio circa 2005 of 4:1 ratio between the cheapest 9mm and the cheapest .22lr when both are "on sale".
