The price of the P6 keeps creeping up, and I was curious what people thought as far as at what point it is no longer a deal.

I know this doesnt answer the question, but does noone have a prob with the fact it doesnt feed hollow points?

Mine feeds hollowpoints fine. The early models had a narrower feedramp- guns that have had the barrel changed, or most made in the later 80's worked fine with hollowpoints.

IMHO anything over what a comparable pistol would go for used is too much. I got lucky and bought several at $259 so I'm jaded- but I wouldn't pay more than $300 for one with both mags.

Interesting question. This is how I was looking at it a few months ago. I guesstimated a formula where I looked at the price of a used p225 (VG/EX condition), minus any upgrade costs to bring a p6 to the same condition.

For example, if a used p225 runs $550 (and up), and a factory Nitron refinish (frame and slide) is $170, then $550 minus $170 = $380. That's what I was finguring the absolute max breakeven point for a p6 in "good" condition that could use refinishing.

J&G has the p6 in VG condition for $370, but only comes with one mag . So, they're creeping out of the "bargain" zone.

The hollowpoint issue does not bother me too much. Some p6's (early) have issues with hollowpoints, but some have noted that later p6's feed them fine. Mine feeds hollowpoints without issue.

The thing that bothers me is the lack of replacement parts and the high price of magazines. I picked up a couple of factory mags at a gun show at $30 each, and considered myself lucky - Top Gun Supply has them for $42.25. But if anything needed replacement in my p6, I'm not sure where I'd be able to go to for parts. Kicking my self for not picking up two a few years ago - one to carry, and one for parts...:banghead:

I looked at one that I would rate G+ - VG in a pawn shop yesterday with two mags but no box or holster. It was marked $419.95. The owner said he had taken it in trade from a guy who had originally purchased it. He didn't bother to bring back the holster or box with it. The "guy" was a good customer so they gave him more on trade than they would most people and the best he would do for me was $399 + 7% tax.... $426.93 OTD.

Not only was that too much IMO but he was asking me to absorb the difference between what he gave his "good customer" and what it should have been priced at. I'm not in the habit of letting someone else gain at my expense and that's what the owner was asking me to do.

Ten minutes later and half a mile down the street I was offered a like new in-the-box 9mm P229 with two mags and the factory paperwork for $535 OTD..... a much better deal IMO. I'm still thinking about it as that's a bit more than I wanted to spend.

BTW, it's not uncommon for some sellers to strip the extra mags and sell them separately. I don't buy from them.

I've seen a couple locally for $500.00, and one in the ad rag for $375.

I did come across a P225 spring and grip screw kit awhile back for I think $27.00. I picked that up.

Most anything I see, costs more than what I paid. I doubt I would buy another, trades however, are always an option.

once it reaches the 400 line, it is in the same arena with LOTZ of great guns, therefore no longer a bargain......still a good gun, but just too high

$300 IMHO because of low capacity, expensive mags or no mags available, and the hollow point issues.

For $500 you can get a nice used 226 without those problems, so why pay $400 or more for a P6?

I keep seeing "hollow-point issues"?

My P6 so far has fed everything 100% I have put through it, including the floor sweepings from under the loading bench.

Mine was made 11/97.

Low capacity?
It holds more then my 1911's, and way more then any of my revolvers.
That's enough for me.

FWIW:

The change in the barrel ramp angle (from 52degrees to 54degrees) went into effect 6/14/89..

Apparently this change was to improve the feeding of hollowpoints in the P6, and if I were looking to buy a surplus P6 I would shop around until I could find a good one manufactured after that date.

Some folks have pistols manufactured before the June/89 change that will feed hollowpoints just fine, but others apparently have not been so fortunate, so common sense would dictate that a shopper would hedge his bets on hollowpoint reliability by waiting for a P6 made AFTER the changeover.

No offense to those who disagree.

Heck, anyway before I'd buy a surplus Sig P6 I'd opt for a NEW Stoeger Cougar. Every post I've ever read about the Stoeger Cougar has been positive. I don't even like Berettas because of a bad experience with a pos Tomcat, and equally pos Beretta Customer Relations folks years ago, but even I'd buy a Stoeger if I wanted a good 9mm pistol in that price range.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

I've got less than the price for one new P226 in these two.
Guess it's up to the individual what the tipping point is.
If you can find a P6/225 now a days for under $325 or so you're doing good.

+1 more for the $400+ range. I wanted one, but GB had them for $400-$500, out of my price range, especially for something requiring shipping and FFL fees. I found a local one for $375, and offered $350 and got it. That seemed like a fair price, consdering the supply of CAI-imported ones has dried up (quite some time ago).

How can you tell if the barrel has been changed? My P6 was made in 1982. The barrel appears to be the original; serial number matches. The ramp hasn't been polished. It eats hollow point just fine.

I know this doesnt answer the question, but does noone have a prob with the fact it doesnt feed hollow points?

good thing neither of my p6s know about that fact.

one is a '79 one in an '80

the p6 is a bargain even at the current going rate of about $400.

I've just returned from the Columbus, GA gun show where I picked up a P6 with two factory mags, mag case, like new black leather holster, box, manual and a test target. Considering what I paid for the Walther PP in .32ACP that I traded, I estimate I have $425 invested. Mine was made in April of 1979. It's in VG condition outside and shows almost no use inside. I had my choice of two.

J&G is the only place that I see them available although there may be other sources. J&G wants $370 with one mag and the box. No holster, no mag case etc. BUT, they'll sell you a mag holder for $7 and a factory mag for another $40. Add $22 shipping and the transfer fee and the price goes over $450.... and you don't get to inspect it until it arrives. It's obvious that J&G strips the extra mags, mag cases and holsters (if it came with a holster) and sells them separately. I don't like companies that do that, especially when they price high anyway.

The supply of P6 SIGs seems to be drying up and I only see the prices going up like most surplus guns do when no more are available from distributors. If you got one early at $250 - $350, be pleased. IMO, what I paid is pretty much the going price now.

Wow. When I got my P6 from J&G two months ago (their very last one, until this next batch, that is... ;p ), it was $379 plus $20 handselect, came with one mag (plus the extra ran $19) and came with the holster. I was feeling a little wierd about paying the $20 handselect, since they only had one to choose from, but they chalked it up to it being in VG/EX condition, not that they had to rummage for a good one. So now they've doubled the price of the "extra" mags and stripped out the holster as well. My opinion of J&G is changing a bit, and not for the better.

I got mine two weeks ago for 325 off gunbroker. Deals are still out there. I agree with the 400 number on the deal threshhold.

the feeding problem is a non issue. If you do happen to get one that has feeding problems, try another brand of ammo. Another solution is to polish the feed ramp. Any gunsmith worth his salt will be able to correct the problems. You should be looking at about $50 for barrel ramp modifications.

Have several and they're really a GREAT GUN (one of my favorites)!!... Hate to say this, but started gettin 'em about two years ago when they started coming in... first two were $250 and $269!... But those days are long gone!
Unless you really love the gun and you find one in truly VG/EX condition $350-400 is about tops for me... and it should definitely come with its original blue-box, German Manual, TWO mags and a German Leather Holster! Would never pay that for one in 'GOOD' condition with ONE mag...
Sometimes you just have to be patient and really hunt around, either the Sig Forum Classifieds or Gunbroker, etc... but the gun's really worth it!!
