does anyone know if you need an FFL or any other license to manufacture magazines? they would be in the 10-20 round capacity if that makes any difference.
thanks
jason

They are not firearms, they are parts. I am 99.99% sure no FFL or federal license of any kind is needed.

I think the only things you would have to worry about are state laws, or possible exporting them. Not sure about the exporting part though.

Federal law does not prohibit the manufacture of magazines. Some states have laws prohibiting the posession and or transfer (sale) of "high capacity" magazines so check your local laws first. The NRA website has a rather comprehensive list of state laws.

thanks. thats what i thought. but since the congress critters managed to legislate a ban against "high capacity" mags the thought creped into my head that maybe their manufacture was regulated. my state has no problem with it (or so my lawyer tells me) so it looks like i'm GTG
thanks again

Right off the ATF website, see example 4 at the following link:

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/firearmstech/071907firearms_manufacturing_scenarios.pdf

Though this example references barrels rather than magazines, the point is the same, if the item being manufactured is not a complete firearm or a firearm receiver/frame, it is not considered manfufacturing of a firearm as far as the ATF is concernced, and so no federal license is needed.
