I thought I put an end to this put apparently ATFE is continuing to release misinformation on state gun laws. Today, April 18th, 2007, the Purdue Exponent (student newspaper) ran an article quoting an ATFE agent that claims that Indiana law allows unconcealed carry of a firearm without permit. This is only true as long as the firearm is not a pistol.

Rifle, carbine, shotgun, machine gun is O.K. without a carry license. If you wish to carry a pistol, openly or concealed, you need the little pink card, i.e. our carry license.

I contacted the reporter, Steve Garbacz, and he advised that there were several incorrect statements of law that ATFE gave him that he did not have room to print. Be very careful in reading anything not from an official ATFE source. Their misinformation campaign is continuing. I will attempt to stop it yet again.

Here's the article with several incorrect statements of law and fact: http://www.purdueexponent.org/?module=article&story_id=5466

El T, do you have the contact information for that reporter? Would you mind posting it here with a synopsis of your reply, so that other members can join in the bombardment.

Talked to the ATFE agent quoted in the article. She was very nice and seemed squared away on Indiana law ("Is someone being sued?"). I'm certain that she was taken out of context.

I will tone down my letter and allow for a gentle correction despite my desire to pound the counsel table and scream objection. Sometimes I froth at the mouth and roll my eyes back into my head.

Dang you El Tejon, that article actually got me excited. that seems like a very basic law for someone to screw up though. oh well, i guess i'll just have to go get myself permitted.
