Been wanting to upgrade the scope on my varmint rifle and dabble in steel shooting and came across an Athlon Argos BTR 1FFP usually a hair over $400 and now $275-$379. Everything I have read says the turrets are good and glass is very good. This will upgrade from a Vortex Crossfire 6-18. Should I look into another option like a Vortex Venom or Midas? Just mainly looking to upgrade for varmint shooting and punching paper out to 300 and ring steel here and there.

Ive been quite happy with rhe Athlons ive had/have.

I have NOT had the Argos BTR, but ive had the old standard Argos, as well as the Argos HMR.
If ive got one consistent complaint, its that thy are heavy, which whouldnt really effect what you want to do with the gun.

If you DO go over the Argos in cost, id look hard at the Arken SH4s, optically i dont think they are as good as the best 400-600 dollar scopes, but they have the nicest turrets and reticle of any that ive used.....

THAT said @Walkalong posted a link in another thread to a ViperG2 for about 540-600 (if i remember correctly) that looks like a killer deal...

I've transferred a bunch of guns for a guy that's a huge long range shooter...guy has a lot of money, so he can afford pretty much whatever he wants. He swears by Athlon scopes, says he cannot tell the difference between those and the Nightforce he has. No first hand knowledge, just passing along information he has told me.

Don't have the Argos yet, but I've got a Neos 3x9x40 on a 10/22. I was pleased enough with it that I decided to buy a Helos 4-20x50. Haven't sighted it in yet, but the glass is as good as any of the Vortex, Burris, and Nikkons I have. The power ring has just enough of a knob to make adjusting easy. Something Burris should take a cue from.

I have the Athlon Argos BTR gen 2 6-24x50 on my 308 AR. I can't remember the difference now from the gen 1. At first I was quite happy with it, but the more I shoot with it the more I'm starting to wonder about it. It's my first ffp scope, so this may be very common, but at max zoom the reticle gets very thick. I've also had some shooting sessions where I really struggled to get the focus and parallax settings right. Seemed like something might have been drifting, but not sure yet. Might have been temperature related as the sun and temperature changed during my shooting sessions. Could be my aging eyesight. Still need to do some more shooting to gain confidence in this scope.

How’s the clarity and tracking?
Tracking is superb!! Clarity? As good as anything under $1k that I've looked through. Very bright as well. Not quite the glass quality of my $1500 Leopolds or Trijicon Accupoint TR23-2G i, but at over 1/3 of the price cheaper, definitely a great scope. The turrets are way nicer also, very crisp audible clicks & a nice zero stop feature. They were running a promo code "save$170" & you'd get the package containing the rings/1 piece 20moa mount, scope covers , bubble level, rear shooting bag etc. free. Hard to beat!

Id agree on the tracking.
MY example, to MY eye, isnt quite as good as some of my other 400-500 dollar optics....and not to damn with faint praise, as that's still IMO very good.

I hear you. If we didn't all see & like things differently, there would only be one brand/type of scope out there, only one type car or truck out there, only well developed blonde 5'3" 124lb 22 year old women, one flavor and brand of whiskey, beer etc. Lol

Very true!

Oh a note on the rings....I really like them.
Whenever I put my long range gun back together I'll be replacing the random rings I've got right now with a set of their 34 Halos.

Their Halo rings appear to be very nice. I went with their 1.5" high 20moa 1 piece mount on both my rifles. As you can see in my pics above, scope sits higher on the AR10 than on my Ruger Precision. Not really liking that! I did purchase a set of medium Arken Halo rings (1.26") & am debating on replacing the 1 piece with the Arken medium rings to bring the scope down lower. If I do that though, I lose my 20moa...... Decisions- decisions lol
