Sen. Slom is one of the many reasons why I moved to his district. He's been banging his head against the entrenched here for many years. I wrote him when I first moved in and thanked him for his perserverence. At the time, he said he will keep on trying, glad he is still fighting the good fight.
I agree with the article from Hawaii Reporter. This state is full of people who do nothing pro-active to prevent what happened last week. Another thing that happens sometimes is a sex assault at the university. Both types of incidents draw the attention of the newsies for a couple weeks then everything is forgotten. People hold ceremonies and vigils, which is nice but don't go through the extra effort to prevent this stuff from happening. In the case of the sex assaults, the university merely calls for more "education" as if that really helps to deter anyone.
The more I think about it, the more irritated I get at this state. I was born here, but I severely doubt I'm going to retire here (another 20+ years), and depending on how several local issues turn out we may decide to just up and leave sooner than that. Screw the weather - we'll adjust.
