The 642 Club is sponsoring a petition requesting that grip manufacturer Hogue inc. consider the possibility of producing a version of their Monogrip in a shorter version that does not extend below the bottom of the grip and retains the backstrap cushion. The petition is located here:

Please show you support for this effort by visiting the petition site and recording your signature (real or screen name) for the document to be submitted to Hogue inc. Thank you for you support.

I would like to see this type of grip in a version that goes to the top of the back strap on the Centennial J Frame. I bet S&W sells more Centennial style J Frames than any other model but almost all of the grips are "one size fits all" - NOT.

OK (though my J-frame is sporting Crimson Trace grips at the moment and I really like them).
Yep. The CTC LG-405 has a cushion at the backstrap and it does not extend below the grip. I'm surprised Hogue doesn't have one like this.

I had two problems with the CTC LG-405. First, the back strap cover is not a uniform thickness. It gets thicker at the top. After years of shooting J Frames I found it caused me to point the gun low. Maybe I could get used to this but then all of my other J Frames equipped with boot grips would not point right.

Second, it does not go all the way to the top of the back strap on a Centennial. I use a high grip and short grips cause the top corner of the back strap to rest right on my thumb joint. Painful!

I am not sure I understand the type of grip you desire for your J frames. I have a S&W 360PD which came with Hogue boot grips and the gun was painful to shoot with 357 mags. I actually switched to the larger Hogue grips which allows my little finger to get a grip. This helps me control the recoil much better. I cannot imagine going back to the smaller grips.

MassMan,

The problem with the grips you have is they do not work that great for pocket carry.

What the OP is wanting is a Hogue Boot Grip that covers the backstrap of the gun. What hurts is that flat metal surface being pushed back into your hand.

Hmmmm... I'm away from home, so I can't refer to an example (damned air travel), but doesn't the monogrip get secured to a stirrup that hangs off the locator pins on the bottom of the grip frame? If that's true, then it HAS to extend below the grip frame.

Get some Pachmayr Compac grips. They're fine.

I know you are asking for grips that cover the backstrap, but have you tried Hogue Bantam grips? I love them and now have them on three of my Smiths.

While you are petitioning Hogue to make make a new grip, how about a stud with a lanyard that would screw into the attachment screw hole in the bottom of their grips. I love the way they look on feild guns.

Thanks Gator, I will have some by next week. What puzzles me is why i haven't found them at Midway. And i have looked. Thomas.

My pleasure, Thomas. I haven't seen them for sale anywhere but from Hogue or S&W. It would be nice if Midway and Brownell's carried them. Maybe if enough of us started pestering them? :D
